Anyone know about Jags?

I never really looked much at Jaguars....but I've started seeing a few in the Autotraders......2003'ish Jaguar S-Types, with the V8....good mileage for 20k. Look like pretty sweet rides.

Do these things have any power? Although it wouldn't be a mustang, it is a V8 at least....

And it's still made by Ford! My dad was on a big Jag kick for awhile when he was looking for a new car. So i know all about em. The s-stypes are nice, and relitively spacious, very nice interior and responsive handling. Came with a 4.2 V8 at 300hp or a 4.2 S/C V8 at 400 - that latter being much more expensive and rarer as a used car. for this model you gotta watch out, cuz it's know for poor reliability and horrible depreciation. 03's in peticular have had a history of problem w/ tranny's, drive trains, suspension/brakes and the cilmate system. Overall it's kinda a gamble as a used car. My dad really liked the XJ which looks more grandpa but is a beast, the 400hp V8 is easier to find and cheaper along with better reliablility 03+. Good thing about these cars is you can get a aftermarket performance kit that's about $2300 thats exhuast,chip, intake ect... that puts it up to around 465hp 445tq which is pretty much an unheard of upgrade for current luxery cars.

terrible car... I used to work at a lincoln-mercury dealer and the LS ( jag S-type) was so bad of a car I quit and went back to a ford store..

From what I seen on them, I am convinced jaguar has homeless and retarded people engineer them. I mean that car is scary to work on, they break down OFTEN

get a caddy CTS if you want something in that catagory that does not suck.

I am glad I am not the only who thinks so, I work on LSs everyday. Probably one of the worst ford cars to own out of warranty.

My wife has a 03 jag x-type (3.0). I've owned it for about 3 years. Bought it used with 12k miles on it. I can honestly say the car has been extremely reliable with very few issues. My wife loves it. Jag provides a good 5/50 warranty. The car will be out of warranty this summer so I plan to purchase an extented warranty from Jaguar. As others have noted it is expensive to fix on your dime.

I had an s-type 4.0 and the transmission went out at 45,000. The dealer fixed it under warranty, if i would have had to pay the price was $8000. The suspension fell apart and also the valve gaskets leaked. I always hear problems with jags. If you get one, def get an extended warranty.

I dont believe that for a second. There is no way, my moms Lexus is like $75 but they drive and pick it up at your house and drop off a loaner. They bring your car back later that day full washed and detailed.

Modern Jaguars are fine cars, reliable as any other Ford, and arguably more reliable than some. The idea they are unreliable stems from the pre-Ford days. Every car can have an issue, not just Jaguars. Are they going to be more expensive to fix than a Mustang? Sure, the car itself costs quite a bit more, so one would assume the parts that go into it might cost more themselves. Doesn't really take a genius to grasp that concept. Cadillacs cost more to fix than Cavaliers, naturally. If low cost of maintenance and repairs are the primary factor in your purchasing decisions, you can stop looking at luxury sedans.

The opinion of a mechanic on the reliability of a kind of car is probably the last opinion one should ever solicit. How many perfectly funtioning examples is a mechanic ever likely to see? Maybe none? So from a mechanic's point of view, virtually every car is currently not working right. And we all know that is far from the truth. One would have to look at data on how many were sold vs. how many require more than routine service, and such data is not available to a mechanic working in a dealer shop. BTW, I've never met a mechanic that owned a car that was in good shape, something that makes me question the judgement of most mechanics when it comes to car recommendations

If someone claims they spend $600 on an oil change, I'd ask what else was done. Like brakes, tires, etc. Because unless you are an absolute idiot, WTF would you consent to paying that much for oil and a filter, plus a half hour labor? It certainly makes no sense to claim that's how much the poil and filter cost, when one can look in any auto parts store and see that 8 quarts of 5w30 and a filter won't run more than 50 bucks or so. Including labor, the job shouldn't cost more than $100 or so at the absolute max, unless other service is performed.

On this site, I always hear about problems with Mustangs. If you get a Mustang GT, definitely get an extended warrantee, as they seem to be the most unreliable car ever made. They are always breaking down, running roughly, making noises, and ruining heads. Total POS.

Keep your comments about peoples parents to yourself, you do not need to get personal with him because he thinks a certain car is a POS.. I am damm glad you aimed that at him and not me, because I lost my mother eight months ago.

I also have worked on every other product ford makes, plus I have worked for GM,Honda,toyota and audi over the years...

Here are the list of the biggest POS's that ford has made in the last 10-15 years

1. contour
2. Lincoln LS
3. Probe
4. Mercury villager
5. 88-90 Lincoln conti
6. 95 windstar

Bottom line is the Lincoln LS and the jag S type is a POS.... If you do not want to listen then fine buy one it probally will run fine as any modern car can go 150k miles EASY.. but be prepared to spend A TON on repairs since it takes much longer to do what is simple repairs on any other ford.

BTW I personally think fords are a good product and I drive a taurus myself, I work on a lot more of them than I do LS's simply because there is a hell of a lot more of them.. I am not ****ing retard I know I work in a ford dealer so i will see broken fords, If I went by what cars I see broken less I would drive something other than the brands I listed above since I have seen pleanty of those broken.

I may not have access to that data but I can access the entire warrenty repair history of any ford I have a VIN for, I look at that on many cars to see what has been done before I continue with my diag, many LS's have page after page of warrenty repairs. I see that way more often with LS than any other ford.

As far as your comment about techs driving cars in bad shape.. Many of us don't care about pimping around and just buy old beat up cars just to have a cheap car with no payments, I have had good luck doing this over the years and I have saved a lot of money. Also We work on cars for 40 PLUS hours a week, some of us are just flat out tired of it and don't want to work on our own cars.. Do you think i really want to fix my car after I just pounded out 16 hours flat rate in a 8 hour shift, NO all I want to do at that point is SLEEP.. I have been driving around on a bad right rear wheel bearing in my car for 6 months now, when i get a damm chance I will fix it..

My mustang when i had it was in perfect mechanical condition at all times and I pounded on it. I fixed that car right away because I cared about it more than my hurting feet..

So go on and ignore the opinions of people that know something about cars and listen to the opinion of people that don't know anything.

If you want a reliable car I would skip the RX-8. Rotarys wear out quickly, its not uncommon to have a total rebuild at 60K and those are not cheap.

Imo Mustangs are pretty reliable, also my mom and sister used to have G35 coupes and they where great too other than the oem tires wear fast. I would go with a 350Z if I where to get a sports car.

But if you are interested in Mach 1s. You are in Cini so its about 4-5 hrs from me. There is a Ford dealer in Auburn, IN that has a 2004 Azure Blue Mach 1 5 speed that is perfect and only has 4000 miles. They want 21,500. You could definatly talk them down to 20K I would think. I can get you more info if you want just PM me.
