rear gear question

Im lookin into getting a different rear gear, only problem is everybody I talked to cant give me a straight answer, the car is gonna see some highway time now and then but other than no major trips, which one would be the best? I dont want it screamin at me when im driving along tho. whats a good company that makes them? And how hard is calibrating the speedo?

People that have the 3.73's will tell you they love them. People with the 4.10's will tell you they love them too. It's all up to you. You'll get both "schools" to recommend their preferred ratio. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

Calibrating the speedometer is easy. Speed calibrators are not that expensive. Well less than $150 I think. You don't need to buy a tuner if all you're doing is the gears.

The only ones that can't give you a straight answer are the ones who are repeating horror stories they've "heard" about gears and gas mileage woes. Truth is 4.10's are the all-around perfect street gear. I have them myself, and they don't kill your gas mileage, they give you a nice acceleration boost, and they won't be screaming at you on the highway. Expect to be running maybe 3000 rpm with them cruising at 80 mph. Only ones I recommend are FRPP (Ford Racing Performance Parts) gear sets.

i have read posts from '03 - '04 automatic owners who had re-calibration problems with SpeedCal devices. No such issues however with 5-speeds.

There's different gear ratios.....The 4.10 Gear will give you a NICE pull...but the engine is going to idle about 300 rpms more than stock...soo if you can handle about 3000 rpms at 80mph on the highway then get em.....I dont have any other gears besides stock on my car....this is just info i've gathered on my quest to get gears...im not to familiar with 3.73's but there SOOOOOOO much info on gears in this forum....just go into the search and type "gears" and find out what works for you

my fault, i forgot that part. its an 04 GT with a 5speed.

I got 3.90s installed on my PI swapped and bolted 1998 GT 5 speed and wished I would have went with 4.10s.

If I get gears on my new car it would definatly be 4.10s.

I have 3.73s and am changing to 4.10s. I didn't get the sop feel I wanted with 3.73s.

Go FRPP if you're doing it yourself... then you can use your old shims and not have to worry about backlash or pinion depth. I had motive gears and spent a LOOOOOONG time trying to get the pinion depth right because they aren't cut exactly the same as the FRPP/OE
