Shift light question.

I want a basic shift light, I have no need or desire to have a gigantic tach. I see a lot of dial shift lights on the market for pretty cheap ($30-$50), that simply wire into the coil and ground. Are these worth it?

I just need it for the basic reason it was invented, so I don't have to look at my tach while going down the track. I can't hear **** with my helmet on, so going off of engine sound isn't working.

proform adjustable rpm shift light is what you need.

Sounds good Chris.

You can even stash it behind a vent (if that works for you, peripherally) for a sleeperish look.

It seems to me you can even grab the tach signal at the stock tach perhaps (I'd have to try this myself to know for sure) - this would save running wires.

Good luck.

Don't know if the quality has improved since, but I had bad luck with a Pro-Form adjustable light a few years back. Had heard they had some quality issues but bought one anyway. Just wanted to warn ya.

On the subject of shift lights, are they any more accurate than the stock tach?

In other words, would a 6k shift light come on when the tach reads 6k or when it's actually doing 6k (which may well be different)?

The aftermarket light (or tach) should be more accurate.

Ok, a friend of mine gave me an Autometer stand alone shift light a while ago....I just forgot I had it. I am going to get pills for it tomorrow.

According to the instructions I found on here, it says I need to hook the green wire from the light to the coil, the black to ground, and the red to ignition hot. Now, do I need to physically run the green wire into the engine bay and put it on the negative side of my coil...or can I jump that wire somewhere in the cab?

If you have a MSD 6 series box you could just plug the green wire into the box.

Oh, I didn't know that. I will have to check it out tomorrow. Unfortunatly my MSD is on the frame rail just above the canister...so I will have to run the wire longer. But that way I won't have to tap into anything.g

Did you mount the MSD on the driver side or the passanger side ? Lots of wire if it is on the driver side. If mounted on the passange side it still could reach inside to the dashboard but takes some planning/Thinking. You could run all the wires on top and along the radatior. Also it will work running it along the strut tower brace front bar if you have one. I run my box in the plastic inner fender behind the fender where it is safe from heat and water spray.
Just take your time and it wil looks real good and neat using those black hose cover things from the auto part stores. The MSD 6A or 6AL have a plug in port build in for the shift light or what ever else you want to connect to it. Just plug and play.
