I am looking for more power with low funds. I was wondering if I should buy the trickflow upper and lower intake manifold until I can afford the heads and cam.? I don't know what kinda gains to expect with just the intake. Right now I have a magnaflow catback, and a offroad x-pipe on order....any suggestions
Thanks
Jason

With out heads and a cam you will gain very little from an intake manifold of any kind.......save up and do it all and once.
If you are looking to go the budget route i would be talking to TMOSS for a ported intake.

If you go with gears (which you didn't say), make sure it matches your goals for the car. You do not want 4.10's or 4.30's or 4.56's if you plan on making big power later, like with boost and a more efficient engine. Keep highway time on your mind as well. I would not put 4.10's on a stock engine for long, it would be useless in my opinion.

As far as getting an intake, I like trickflow intakes, and if it will be a while before you can save up the money for the heads and cam, I would get it. No bigger than a track heat if anything on your stock engine.

Trickflow makes a great h/c/i package for the money. Around 2,000 dollars.

I also think that gears would be your best bang for the buck performance upgrade at this time. The intake will only be good for 10-15 hp up top but you will probably loose some low end tq. In terms of the gears...i would say 3.73's for a 5spd and 4.10's for an Auto. I also agree that 4.10's are overkill on a stock 5.0 with a stock cam! good luck

I Have thought about gears since I got to replace my lsd now...I just bought the lsd kit. But I have a T5 trans with a 3.55(i think) first gear, anyway its low. So I was thinking a 3.55 or 3.73, I have a 3.08 rear end from the factory. I do mostly highway driving and Love to get on it at the stoplights, I do plan on making around 300whp with this car, and also like to do some dragracing and roadcourse racing (Virginia internation Raceway, Lowes motorspeedway etc). I want a good allaround preformer...Thoughts????

jhonda - I agree with your thinking...too often many people add to much gear to supplement what horsepower they don't have, we will just assume you are going to have lots of horsepower down the road:)

If you hit the highway often, I'd try some 3.73's or a bit lighter.

I think 4.10's are overkill. Friend did it to his 95 not to long ago...pretty boring in the high rpms.

Why would you assume...that leads to false assumptions....even if he did h/c/i He will NOT have lots of horsepower...what around 280-290rwhp on a good day....thats not alot....400rwhp is alot...4.10's will be perfect even with that amount of hp(300rwhp)...Its when you get 350rwhp and above 4.10 then might be too much gear. even then youll only go faster with 4.10's on the track...dont fear the gear.
these arent high rpm cars so of course it will be boring above 5500rpm, they stop making power at 5200rpm. My car went 14.5 with the same mods and 3.55's... then went to 4.10's and the same car cut 14.0's....3.55's are weak gears for these cars. go atleast 3.73 or go home...dont fear the gear youll regret it when you h/c/i car runs 13.3-13.0's with 3.55's, when you could be in the 12.8 range with 4.10's.

Even if you run out of 4th gear in the 1/4 mile Due to "too much power" and you have 4.10's... run a taller tire it will do the same thing as running less gear, run a 27" tire, it will make those 4.10 feel like 3.90's...28" tall tire will make them like 3.73's...see you have room to grow with your hp gain in the future...haha on that " alot" of Horsepower 302ci h/c/I car pushing a WHOPPING 290rwhp, yea thats alot of hp. lol, not really
BUT if you mess up and put 3.55's there no fix. you cant run a smaller tire, youll have to run a 24" tall tire....IMAGINE that....youll have to spend 400 on another gear swap, to do it again...something you should have done right in the first place, not have feared the gear. go 3.73 or 4.10 for a manual 5-speed car...

Now boosted that a different story, and depends on blower type also, centri go 3.73/4.10 in manual car Kenne Bell go 3.55's and turbo cars go 3.27 or 3.55

Has anyone ever put a TF intake on a stock engine? Were there any gains?

Yes, you will see some gains, but the intake is not a good match to the stock heads so you won't get as much as you would with a better choice. If you want to put it on now anticipating later changes then go ahead.

A used Cobra/Explorer would be a better choice, stock for now and ported later if your future head choice will flow 250cfm or less.

you've got choices

Sorry to jack the thread guys..... Flavadave4, are you selling your stang man? Saw a listing on craigslist with a picture of your car. Posted in the bay area

If the budget is tight, just go with junkyard parts. Call around for an explorer motor and take the intake, a buddy of mine got lucky. got the exploder intake w. a set of fresh gt-40 heads for 200 bucks. Should save some nice coin, budget right might end up w/ h/c/i

i do alot of highway driving with mine and i have a t-5 with 3.55s and i love it. nice seat of the pants feel and still get 20-22 mpg on the highway

I still get 20mpg with everything in my sig with mixed driving but mostly highway.
The edelbrock performer, a ported lower or a gt40/cobra/explorer would be way better suited for a stock motor. The tfs will get you some peak numbers but not till you get way up in the rpm range.
