Rear end gear oil amount

I just changed out the third member on my 8" granada rear and filled it up with gear lube. WHat is the capacity of the third member gear oil? I put in a quart and it has not spilled out the drain hole yet. Is the 1 quart enough or do I need to add more until it overflows?

Filling mine was a bear as there was no angle to get to the rear fill hole with the gas tank and exhaust in the way. How do you guys do it? I used a 1/4" flexible hose and attached to the gear hole nosel and fed it through the filler hole and sqeezed. Took 1/2 hour!!!! My hands were sore from 1/2 of continuous squeezing to force the oil through.

Buy a pump. It will make your life easier next time.
You want to fill it up to about the peek hole.
Don’t forget to add friction modifier if you have a trac-loc diff.

Approximately 4 to 5 pints, depending on trac loc vs open.

The easy way to do it is to get about 5 feet of plastic tubing. Stick one end in the hole and attach the other end to the bottle. Suspend the bottle upside down and punch a hole in the bottom of it. Come back about 4 hours later and it will all be in there.

It really helps to warm the gear lub first. Some people have put it in the microwave or you could soak it in hot water. Make sure it is open BEFORE heating it.

Easiest way I know is to add the appropriate amount of fluid through one of the axle tubes before installing the axle.

I just drained and refilled my 8" and I squeezed as much Royal Purple as I could from the regular bottle. Then I used a little travel shampoo bottle and filled that with oil and kept doing that over and over until it started draining out of the hole. It didn't take a half hour!

8-inch fill capacity (conventional or Limited-Slip) is 4 pints (fill to bottom of fill hole).

9-inch is 5 pints, with or without locking differential.

For either 8- or 9-inch, if equipped with Limited-Slip/Traction-Lok differential, put the 4 ounces of friction modifier in first, then fill to bottom of fill hole with gear oil.
