Anybody have the Shelby Drop template & bit?

Does anyone have one of the Shelby drop templates and drill bits that I could rent or borrow? I have a paper template that I could apply, but I don't want to be "off" when I do this as there is only one chance to get it right! I have drill bits up to 1/2", but as you know this needs to go 17/32". Are the 17/32" bits stepped so they fit into a 1/2 chuck?

You can buy bits that have 1/2 shanks at most any hardware store. I would suggest getting a step bit for doing this. Start with 1/8 " hole and work with the step bit to closest to 17/32 and finish off with the 17/32 bit. If you have access to a drill press make your own metal template. Make sure you you use some lube and sharp bits. Test fit on your arm to sure it fits right.
 
I used the paper template myself. What I did was cut out the original holes on the paper and bolted the paper to the shock tower. Then I used a punch to center where the new holes were going. From there I used like 5 or 6 bits and worked my way up to the final size.

I tried that and It didn't work. Most popular hardware store will not have a 17/32" bit. You could also try www.mcmaster.com, not too expensive and quick.
If you drill your holes in the right place, it will work. Your UCA studs are 1/2", which usually measure about .495" or less, and all drills will drill slightly oversize, meaning a 1/2" drill will likely make a .505" hole, which is more than enough clearance. Worked for me...
 
You guys are wusses. I drew mine out buy hand.:rlaugh:

The advice given me was :

1. check, recheck and check again.
2. center punch first. If the first hole is off it's all off.
3. check again.
4. start very small and then enlarge the drill bits to 1/2" checking in between sizes.
5. I used a small round file to clean up the holes a little and it fit perfectly.

Just make sure when it prints, 1 inch is = 1 inch
 
If being careful is being a wuss, then I must be. As a machinist, I know full well the meaning of "do it once, and do it right". If may just be two holes, but get it wrong and you'll be sorry for a long time.


I wasn't talking about being carefull. I was talking about using a template in order to ditch doing the layout. I was also just pokin' fun.:D

I tried using the paper temp. but, I just couldn't get it perfect. And yes, I wasn't making light of going it right. This job can be botched up in a very quick hurry.

I didn't trust someone else's template. I physically laid it all out myself to make sure it was PERFECT.


If you read the post you'll notice that I checked it, rechecked it and checked it some more so the only person to blame was myself if it was wrong.:rlaugh:
 
Oh yea, I spent an hour in the first wheelwell making sure it was right before I had the sack to drill the first hole.:nice:

Besides nothing makes you look like a bigger moron than saying the words "Can you weld this up? I drilled it in the wrong spot.":rlaugh:
