Bought an 88 LX 5.0 (pics)

I cant stand alot of people on here are saying that its going to be rusty underside. It sat on pavement for a few years, big deal. All that body rust can be fixed.

The kid finally got a 5.0 car, a while back he was having a tough time having his father allow him to get a 5.0. Who cares if its a little rough around the edges. Its his first sensible car that he has got and he likes it. As a body man I'd have to say that rust on his car is nothing.

I have a decent amount of rust (frame rail/shock tower, quarters, floor has a hole) on my car that someone else would probably sell the car because of. Well, its only metal work and its my first and probably ONLY 5.0 I will ever have and I want to keep it that way. My cars chassis has 240000 NEW JERSEY miles.

IMO a well restored car is WAY more impressive than a clean low mileage car, Have fun with this one Ryan, first thing I would recommend doing is takin the rear, gas tank, and the exhaust out and wire wheel the underside of her and coat it with some POR15. Then move onto restoring the body. Good luck with her. What are your performance plans?

stock for now...i want to pay my dad back the 1,000 i owe him..becasue this was his car fund for the spring for new top and a few things but loaned it to me...so i want to pay him back first...and i OWE HIME BIG TIME a for this...

my uncles called me a redneck since ive had 3 cars and dont got my licence yet  yeah...the tank has to come out becasue it has some bad gas from sitting for 6 years...my first mod though would be gear...idk maybe 3.73's or a 4.10...depends i got a while to figure that out...bought this time next year ill have the 1,000 paid off and some money saved up for a couple of things... id love to do a H/C/I but that may have to wait till 2009 idk we will see...depends on how things go with me this year..

yeah and you dont know how long it took me to talk my dad into letting me get a 5.0..... 6 YEARS!!!!

How much to repaint - well to do it right, you are looking at an easy $5000. Of course, you could just take it to Maaco. To do my Mustang GT I am getting quotes all in the $5000 - and mine doesn't have a single spot of rust. With the rust on it, you will have to strip the car down to bare metal to see what is good and what's bad. Almost certainly it will be a lot worse than it looks underneath the paint. Good luck in having it done in 6 months. I think you overpaid for it given the shape of the body - no rust I think you would have a fair deal, but that rust is a killer. Good luck with it. Gonna need it :)

 try about 400-600...we wil do it ourselves like we did the 86...... my dad and his buddies have been paint cars since they were my age so we will do her up right. :D

ill say it again...ALL THE RUST YOU SEE IN THE REAR IS SURFACE RUST!!!!!!!

good luck on that, the only way to tell is to strip it down and find out. I had an old car that only had a few spots on top of the paint. I threw on some aircraft stripper and there was hardly a spot of clean metal on it. not to mention some rather ingenious bondo work. I hope you know how to weld.

ah im ok at it....todd will b e doing the welding...

yeah it looks like allot of work. i praise you here:

- regatta blue :D
- the price. i was looking at 4 banger auto verts that were north of 3 grand. thats how scarce foxes are in my area...to me that looks like a steal. perhaps you could find a better chassis that has no motor or trans in it and swap motor and trans into the better chassis. that rust looks pretty bad in some places.
-regatta blue annndd a white top (absolute sexxx)

i dont so much praise you here:

- im more of a go fast guy, while a vert would be sick, i can do with a roof and less weight, less junk to break ect.
- like most other people are saying you could held onto whatever car you owned before and saved money while earning dads respect THENN splurged and gotten a rust free (hatch or coupe in my opinion) that was rust free and in good shape (and had another pedal....
-auto. i am a supporter of shift kits and high horsepower auto mustangs. they can be fun. its just hat your gonna need more whoop ass sitting between your struts in order to make it fun down the road.

now like all other kids that i know under the age of 20, your gonna reply and tell me why im wrong, ect... just keep in mind that i think you made a good decision. i talked my dad into getting me a 5oh and its been worth it over here. i just understand how much work that things gonna need.

yeah only thing is if i would have waited...i wouldn't of been able to get a 5 speed till i was 18...and this is a good deal ive found in my area.....

i will agree there's going to be some pretty long nights but hey..im up to it...something to keep me busy with a worth while end result.

I started reading this thread thinking it would be everyone happy for the guy, but obviously it turned out the opposite. He got a 5.0 which he has been dreaming about, which is awesome! :nice: I bet a lot of first 5.0's that members have had were in the exact same condition. Who cares if its rusty, it sounds like he knows what he is getting in to. Ryan, have fun with it, I know I have had so much fun with mine I will never look back at the amount of money or time invested and regret it.

no but you telling me rust form good metal is...metal is metal and rust is rusted metal...it can allways be fixed...you bust of not seen my dads mustang :nonono: it was the defination of RUSTANG

Im here semi defending you and people are still calling me out and saying im picking on you.. Good luck with the car when you finish it we can have that race.. At the track of course..

anything can be fixed on a car with time, effort and cash. They turned a rusted out 4 door 57 chevy into a 2 door CONVERTIBLE on Overhaulin'! Metal can be cut and welded... no big deal! My floors are probably more rusted than Ryan's lol

if you build it.......they will come.......

doing all the work ourselves

BTW I'm no body man but wouldn't it be cheaper and better to just replace the panels on your car with ones from a donor car?

yes and no...see all that you see on the trunk lid...fender ect is all SURFACE rust..a patch panel will be welded into where that hole it though.......so no no body panels will be replaced. ill get better pictures when i get the car at my house...i cant wait to start messing with it.....come Friday :nice:
