Bought an 88 LX 5.0 (pics)

Man you can always depend on good old Stangnet for some grade A flaming.

I would just advise not to dump a fortune into it....and don't fall in love with it. Rust can be fixed but to me i'd rather replace an engine than fix rust. Also have you been under it yet? And i don't mean poke your head under from the side, i mean put it on a lift and look at the frame and the torque boxes and such? There's a good chance you have some frame rust if the body is that rough.

I'm on my 3rd Mustang and they just keep getting better and better. I don't think i'm ever getting rid of my coupe, but you NEVER know. Everything has a price and there's always a good deal to be had somewhere.

I paid $1200 for my first Mustang, an '88 GT one owner:

yeah...ain stangnet great? :SNSign:

already ahead of you...we jacked the car up and slid under there...everything is solid.... the body is like this becasue it was sat half and half under a car port..hence why the driver side look better then the passenger... just give me a while...it will look good.

after we get the top on and get it running right ill get a video and some pics...this weekend will be spent doing a lot of little things...

looks like a project. Pull the carpet up and tell me how little rust there is;)

congrats and good luck....

floors are solid...already checked...if you look int he one pic you can tell the driver side seat is not bolted in...we pulled it out pulled the other panels and checked the drivers side floor...it was perfect... passenger side felt solid...but when he delivers it Wednesday till pull that out and check that side...

1,600 delivered to my door with a brand new black top and a brand new auto tranny with 2,000 miles on it..

worth it? to me yes....to most of you probably not because its not a "5 speed" and its a little rusty... but to me...its a diamond in a ruff...a big ruff at that...you all seen what my dads car started looking like and the way the paint is today...nicer huh?

hell no dude, i honestly would have bought it for that price. i want sooo bad to have a drop top stanky for a dd. my lumina is burning like a quart every week now lol. good job man, and i know you'll take care of it.

Congrats on the find, Ryan. As the owner of my second Regatta Blue 88 LX hatch, I can certify that you won't see many in that color. That was why I ordered my first one in 87, absolutely everyone had red, black, white or grey. They didn't come with anything but blue interior, so take very good care of your vert specific interior parts, that paint never works as well as the originals. Also, as you were lucky enough to find one that was never carved up by someone thinking they were John Force or Vin Diesel, I can only suggest that you will be well served to keep it as stock as you can. That car can make you money if and when you decide to sell, whereas every deviation from the car you found will begin to cost when the signs go in the windows. Collectors will pay attention if you do it the Ford way, and, no matter what you do to it, someone will be going faster. Your seats will be the worst thing about your 88, they are low and kinda cushy, the 87 GT or 89 LX all the way to the 93's are your best bet for those. The speed density is neither a benefit nor a detractor, just a management system. Again, congratulations, Indiana Jones couldn't find one like that!

That looks a like a great project car. I want to get a half rust 85 or 86 and start in. I got my mint '91 stang when i was 16. You can handle it as long as you don't drive like a moron. I love fox bodys.

congrats on the car!

What about that GT in the garage????? why didnt you get that one?! :D

it looks rough. really rough. like A LOT of work rough. But whatever floats your boat. I think you coulda saved a tad more money and had a nicer one. But then i look at the going rate of foxes in our area....and the selection. sometimes it seems all thats out there are gorgeous/expensive cars and cheap/junk.

Buying or fettng a new top is chep but shops here want $400 just to install. (one of the only things I refuse to try) Have fun and don't rush it. I just got a valve body and TC for my AOD so it should be alot better now. I have to have an auto due to my wife's MS. Better to have an auto than no Stang at all.

wow, the 5.0 fox's in my junkyard are in better shape 90% of the time.

seriously, that looks rough.

But you know, you did say over and over that you WOULD have a 5.0 before such and such date... and it looks like you did it. Gotta hand you that. :nice:

With a new top and tranny to your door? Border line. Good luck with it!

I don't know, I agree I would check out the rest of it for rust. Your better off getting a 4 popper and swapping the V8 stuff over than trying to fix a lot of rust. Maby you should have looked further, I don't know. I understand the theory of taking a zero and turning it into a hero, but beyond personal satisfaction of that, it isn't worth it.

Not a bad car, but I would look at it realistically. Nice first car.

I don't agree with what some people are saying. With the going rate of the foxbody today i think you got a good deal - IF you did as you said, that is looking under the car make sure no rust resided in the torque box areas and the floorpan and frame rails look good with no rust, and the only rust areas are that one patch with the hole and that surface rust, i think thats not too bad. Interior is blue yuck, but the panels dont look bad. Nothing a good cleaning and some black die could cure. Ive had a stang in worse condition that ive brought back. If its only surface rust on the trunk, then the only patch panel in theory you would need is that side, then its not going to be too bad at all as far as work goes. I think you did good ryan :nice: congrats, good luck, and make a progress thread!! :SNSign:

Im glad you finally grew a set and finally got the 5.0 but if the body panels are that rusty the floor is definately rusty. I could be considered a good deal if the tranny is really rebuilt in which you will not know until you install it. Personally i would of waited out for one in better shape.. Ive done the stang with rust thing before and it just keeps coming back. And since your from Ohio the floor is almost guaranteed to have rust..

i wasn't flaming him at all. if that's what he wanted. kudos for him. enjoy it. drive the wheels off it. i paid $1,200 for my Capri. bought it on ebay. Most people probably wouldn't have got it. but i wanted a Capri that bad. didn't have the money to afford a nicer one. so i bid and won the one i have. it's going to take a lot of work to restore it fully. but, oh well, it's what i've wanted since high school. so ryan take that for what it is worth. and enjoy your stang.
