Well i brought my car to the shop to get the new gears put in and i got a call 2 hours later, the mechanic says i need a new axle because my passenger side axle is "pitted", he says he doesnt know what caused it but coudl have been from hitting a big bump or something..

Anyway does this sound legit or are they just trying to squeeze a few extra bucks out of me?

lol, thats the same thing they said to me, its been about a year now and about 20k miles........so i dunno lol, but u should take a look at it urself just incase. the damage can be so little that u wont notice, then again that damage may give u that "OH ****" reaction, so i say, just take a look urself.

ok good i just wanted to hear someone else say they had the same problem

I had a similar thing happen to me. It was the driverside outer bearing area. The axle was pitted and grooved where the bearing sat. Caused a loud howling and had to replace the axle and bearing. Mechanic never saw something like that before.

It's actually very common on GM 10 and 12 bolt rearends. In order to save money the bearing rides on the axle instead of a race like a Ford 9 inch. I know why Ford copied them for the 8.8, it is cheaper to produce.
