Overheating and now too cold?

During the summer months I have been having an over heating problem. On friday I changed my radiator, upper and lower hoses and heater hoses, replaced the t-stat with a Mr Gasket 180 and replaced the coolant. The overheating problem is now gone. On the street the car drives normal with the gauge between the N and O position. And when I go up hills, or get on the gas hard, it hits the R mark but than will cool down. However when I'm on the freeway the gauge will drop down below the N position. ,Does anyone else's car do this. I had an other 94 and it never did that. Should I put the 195 t stat back in? Im gonna get a gauge and see what the actual temp is. I just need to know if its normal. If it helps, My mods are Frpp cobra intake, bbk cai and flowmaster catback. Thanks in advance.

heh that's exactly what my car does. It's normal don't worry, below the N is about 180. So during freeway driving you're hitting the T-stat, on the street your fan isn't coming on until 208 so it'll allow the temp to get higher. And when you're flooring it well obviously that makes a bunch more heat. Wouldn't it be nice if you could floor it and the temp stayed low? Mustangs = hot running turds :notnice:

Thanks Fopar I just wanted to make sure. I just didn't remember that happening in my other mustang but I haven't driven that one for 2 years now. I know it would be nice if they didn't heat up like that. Its almost scary.

Just below N is 180* so that's right at your t'stat opening temp.
Which radiator did you use? I wish my engine could run that cool. :(

I wish!

Mine has never run that cold! I even have to run the A/C to keep it below the "M" and I've got a new rad & hoses, plus a tranny cooler & new water pump! As for the stock gauge its a POS and is all over the place. I've got to get an after market guage set up asap

I just used a replacement stock radiator. I guess its doing the trick. I just recently replaced the waterpump as well. Again i used the stocker. Im very happy with it now. I took it for a drive today. It was 116 outside. I ran the ac and went on a nice cruise and it never hit the R mark. I guess cause I was using the ac and the high speed fan was on the whole time. Before I swaped out the radiator I did use a cooling system flush and ran the car for a while than made sure all the crap was out of the motor too. And of course a new radiator cap. I only paid 175 for the t stat, gasket, radiator, hoses, coolant and pressure cap. Well worth the money.

I didnt think running the AC would keep it cooler. I thought turning the heat on would draw heat out from the engine bay and cool it down

Your right. The condenser puts more heat back into the system. But he probably uses the AC to get the high speed fan going, thus actually cooling the engine down.

Yep one of the little tricks I picked up from you guys here in the forums. For whatever reason if I don't the car sometimes will get all the way to "L" before it drops back, however if I use the AC to bring it on sooner the engine runs cooler. The engine hasn't boiled over in a very long time (since I put the new rad in last summer) I had a pal test the ECR against his computer at the shop and it is doing what it's supposed to, so I'm at a loss as to why the engine continues to get overly hot. Just one of those weird bugs I can't shake.

Edit: Upon more reading and then a quick peak at the car I'm missing the centre section of the air deflector :( So I just ordered hopefully it'll make a difference. Gotto love that search function!

Im running a 351 with the stock radiator and a 180 T stat and I dont ever have any issues. Only time it starts to get half way up the gauge is when Im stuck in traffic and the engine does not get any air flow. Other then that it always runs pretty cool

Does your gauge move up and down, or does it stay in one place the whole time? I.E. going up hill or pullin through the gears a little harder.
