I NEED HELP STABBING MY DISTRIBUTOR

Sorry about the caps lock in the title...

This is a stock block with everything else in it aftermarket and brand new (306)

1. I need to prime my oil system, and was told i can do it with a cordless drill, and a long 1/4" extension.

is this the best method? I have seen the oil priming rods, but im broke, and just need to get it running as cheap as possible.

(how long do i need to spin it to ensure its all primed?)

and if it takes me a few days to get the distributor in, will i have to prime it again, or is once sufficient?

im going to put the distributor in. I need a very detailed "how to" and pictures would be awesome! I am running a carb, and was told that if i have it 180* out, it will backfire, and blow out my power valves, so im trying to avoid that.

Once i have that in, and run the plug wires, ill just about be ready to fire the thing up.

Any advice on anything i should triple check before i turn the key?
 
as far as the oil pump priming, i've always rented the tool from autozone for like $20 and then returned in and received my $20 back.

using a drill, on reverse, spin it slowly and gradually increase a little faster, but dont go balls out. i usually take off the valve cover and watch the oil come out of each pushrod and drip from each rocker.

for the distributor, remove spark plug #1, put your index finger in the hole and have someone turn the balancer with a breaker bar. you want it on the COMPRESSION stroke. once you feel the compression trying to get past your finger, turn it until it's at 10* to the right of the 0 mark. put the distributor in with the rotor pointing at the #1 spark plug terminal.

that should be it unless i forgot something :)

i might just go rent the tool then, thanks for the tip. :nice: i kinda had that in mind, ive just never done it personally, and idnt want to jack it up. thanks!!!

how can you tell it is on the compression stroke? just look at the valve and make sure they are both closed for that cylinder.

that shouldnt be too hard, i had a buddy show me how to adjust my rockers, and he showed me how to watch the valves, thanks for the info :nice:
 
you dont need to pull the valve cover, i generally pull the #1 spark plug and have a buddy hold his finger in the hole while i bump the starter(with the key off using the solenoid) until i hear the compression comming out. Come to think of it last time i did this i used #5 cylinder by accident and it worked fine..weird

I appreciate all the responses so far, but i still have the 1 question.... say i prime the oil system tonight, but dont install the distributor till saturday, will i have to prime it again, or will i be cool?

the reason im asking this, is iim trying to get everything done so i can have some friends come help me stab the dizzy and start this thing this weekend if possible. but i want to get little stuff out of the way first, like priming the oil system.

would i be better off waiting to prime it until right before i stab it and start it?
 
you should be fine but i'd do it again the day of fire-up, your goal is to fill the block, oil filter, lifters, pushrods, and upper end with oil, assuming your were generous with the assembly lube all you need is oil in the system so it pumps up quicker
