fixed the crazy rubbing and squeeking sound (it was the smog pump related pipe hitting the exhaust, took it out and its all well)

here is whats happening now....(yea here it goes again, right?)

i have a 180deg thermostat in the car and the pump was replaced by the previous owner. the car was running GREAT and the temp was always between a quarter and half
recently the temp started getting high. it never drops below half and it goes over half every few minutes and goes back down to the middle again, THEN when i get on it, the temp rises to 3/4.
*lets say im cruising at 60, the temp will stay in the middle and then rise for no reason and then drop again, and it keeps doing that. Then if im goin 50-60 and take it out of gear and let it roll, the temp RISES and takes a min or so to drop. At idle is the best tho, the temp always drops when i pull up to a light and let it idle for a min (it drops in a matter of 30 secs with me reving it a bit thinkin im accelaratin the water pump)

What could that be?? help before i start pulling everything off and borrowing lots and lots of $$$ to get a radiator, fan and w/pump

f***ing temperature problems :bang:

Did you run the KOEO and KOER tests? I have the exact same problems, and I have some error codes with my EGR and Thermactor systems. I'm still troubleshooting these issues, so I don't have a solution. If you still have your EGR valve installed, I'm wondering if our issues are cause by too much exhaust being dumped back into the intake by the EGR.

Does your engine ping at all?

if you have the a/c on how are the temps?

when the a/c is on it should make the fan run at constant high speed. if the fan isnt spinning at high speed (you can tell low from high when its going) then it may be an electrical problem somewhere

you could also do what some people do and just run a switch so it forces the fan to come on high speed when the engine reaches temp

I wouldnt begin to try and determine much with the stock gauge, plain and simple. A 15 dollar mech gauge works fine - you can remove it once the issue is fixed or hide it under the dash if you dont want to look at it.

I won't comment much on the rest since I feel the gauge readings can be so misleading. Here's a tech note on cooling systems that might be of assistance. You'll find hyperlinks for manual fan switches and CCRM diagnostics if needed.

Good luck.

+1 for getting an aftermarket gauge. It cost me under 80 dollars for an Autometer Cobalt series short sweep electric gauge, dual gauge pod, and a few wiring accesories. Did it in about an hour. Things to check would be the belt and tensioner for any slippage. Sender could be junk. Any reason there would be any air in the coolant system? Recent service, etc. Gauge could just be crapping out on you. If im not mistaken, theyre driven by little plastic gears. My stock gauge used to randomly work so I replaced it with the above mentioned parts and now I know for sure what my cars running at. A shade above 195 with stock T-stat.

let's hope it is not the water pump. the bearing in the pump on my mother in law's caprice wagon was gone and i replaced it a few weeks ago. the water pump on a chevy is very easy to replace, only 4 bolts

i might have explained it wrong... but the gauge doesnt jump back and forth it does take time for it to raise and drop and the temp does drop after the fan comes on, its just that i feel like the fan comes on only after the gauge has passed the half mark (i have aftermarket gauges w/o the letters so i cant tell you where it is in relation to the letters)
so thats y i didnt look into the gauge being the issue although i am getting some by the end of this week

just to let you know a lil more....i flushed the coolant, added water wetter and replaced the thermostat (180 again) and it seems like the temp is lower but still higher than it used to be and it does go over half even after all this but not as far past the 1/2 mark

ill keep posting and you guys keep the help coming

THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING SO FAR!!!

(i have aftermarket gauges w/o the letters so i cant tell you where it is in relation to the letters)

If read you right, you have an aftermarket gauge. If so, tell us what temps you see when things happen. I referenced the fan on/off thresholds in the link I provided earlier.

Good luck.
