2001 Cobra Eaton SC question here!

HI all, I looked all over this Forum and didn't find anyone asking the same question. What needs to be included (parts wise) to install an Eaton SC from an '03 Cobra to a '01 Cobra? Besides getting the internals forged and all that follows. I'm just referring to actually installing the Eaton to the block. What needs to be done? Thanks

You don't have the same heads as the '03-'04 Cobra....so start with those. After that, you'll need the blower, intercooler, bracketry, as well as fuel and inlet system upgrades, cables, fittings, sensors, etc, etc.

You're better off to start from scratch with either a Kenne Bell unit (if you insist on a positive displacement blower) or one of the more popular Centrifugal chargers (Paxton, Vortech, ATI) on the market.

there is a lot of work as you can see from the list of parts I have above, believe me as a friend with a 99 Cobra did the conversion last winter and IMO I would have just added a vortech or procharger

I stand corrected. I forgot about the '99/'01 Heads being of the Tumble Port "C" design.

But just for the record, not all of the 4V heads are compatable with the lower '03-'04 Cobra blower manifold. The dual (round/square) intake port configuration on the ealry "B" castings '93-'98 are completely different than that of the later single port, Tumble Port and '03-'04 DOHC head casting and will not work with the later intake manifold.

I would be interested in the Vortech or Procharger but I have read before (even on the KB site) the the "positive displacement blower" doesn't lag like the centrifugal style chargers do. besides that I think the positive style ones leave the engine compartment looking cleaner and less cluttered.

Take what you read on Kenne Bells website with a grain of salt. They're in the business of making money and have a habit of wording many of their so called "unbiased" comparisons in a manor that always shifts the favor to their product. First off, Centrifugal superchargers do not "lag". They may not hit as hard down low as a Positive Displacement charger does, but "lag" is something reserved for Turbo systems. Centrifugals do however require faster compressor speeds, which in turn require more engine RPM to achieve. Your average street oriented Centrifugal will start coming on just under 3,000RPM and hit hard beyond that. Positive Displacements tend to hit hard down low and taper as engine RPM (and blower RPM) increases.

A rear gear swap will shorten the ramp time of the Centrifugal blower and if forged internals and more boost is in the future, swapping out to a smaller blower pulley will not only increase peek manifold pressure, but will allow the blower to come on harder and faster as a result.

Either way....if bottom end is what you're looking for, then by all means stick with the Positive Displacement unit, but either method will make great power and torque both on the street and at the track and get you down to where you want to go in a hurry.

Just my two cents here... but I prefer a positive displacement setup over the centrifugal especially for a daily driven street car. I think having a lot of torque and power down low in the powerband is more fun for a daily driver than having the mid to top end rush a centrifugal provides. Again, this is just personal preference. Each type has its merits and disadvantages and a lot of your decision should be based on what you plan on doing with the car and how you drive it.

You meant '96-'98, right? Or are you including B heads used on Lincoln Mark VIII's starting in '93?

I wish KB made an intercooled SC for the B head crowd.

Yeah, I was making refference to the all of the early B Head 4.6L DOHC's in general, not just those designated to the Cobra platform.

It does suck that Kenne Bell doesn't offer the early kits in intercooled form, but one nice thing about it, is that it does keep the price down. And running water/methanol to cool the charge is still an option.
