Okay here is the scenerio. I am looking to build my 86' into a 10 second streetable car. Will bot be daily driven. I am not worried about the car hooking I already have the suspension layed out. But I need to know what direction to go as far as a budget minded small block build. Examples: 302 H/C/I full bolt ons on spray? 331 Stroker N/A? Also what transmission was thinking either a proshifted t-5? Maybe a c4? I need as much input as I can get! Thanks Joe.

dss 331, afr 185's, systemax intake, Anderson hi-rev cam, s trim. Car ran 10.55@124mph with a cog set up. Made 562rwhp 527trq with a slipping belt before switch to cog. And that was with wedge heads.

i would go 351 from the start, are you staying N/A or going turbo/supercharged? and a C4 would get you there much faster and easier than a T5, one guy took .4seconds off his ET by switching to a C4, and i believe he was running low 11's

For your 10 second goals:

If you want to stay with a 302 based block, I'd get a 347 Stroker from http://www.fordstrokers.com, using a main girdle. Get a set of good heads, like a set of ported Canfield's or Trick Flow High Port's, and a good custom valvetrain setup from http://www.camshaftinnovations.com, and make sure your valvetrain is stable while you're at it (7/16" studs with a stud girdle OR a shaft rocker setup). Carbed or injected, that's up to you. Either a 4150 based custom carb from TMPcarbs or Pro Systems matched to your motor on a Vic Jr/Victor/Funnel Web or something along the lines of a Trick Flow R series if you're injected. Get some serious gear in the car, and if you want to be dead nuts reliable, a high-stall C-4.

If you want to do a 351W based block, I'd still order from Ford Strokers and get a 408W.

331 stroker w/10.1 forged flats, set of TFS cnc'd heads, hyd. roller something around .600 lift and 240's at .050 on a 110, Vic. Jr intake w/750 holley and a 200 shot of juice, good built AOD w/3800 convertor and a good 8.8 w/ 4.10's should get the job done nicely I think.

A good 347 setup will run 10's all natural, especially in a car that doesn't need to be setup for Daily driving.
A 392 is not a bad idea either.
No reason to waste any money on juice if you are using a stroker, because it can be done without it.
And building a 347 costs little to no more than a 331, so i see no reason to use a 331.
Run it EFI too.

What kind of budget? If you don't want to spend a million $, just run a stock rebuilt shortblock. Forget the stroker and all that bs, it makes no sense whatsoever to waste good, expensive stroker internals in a stock block when you can easily go 9s with 302 cui. Pretty much any decent set of heads will work fine, Trick Flows, AFRs, Patriot, Canfield, GT40, Windsor Sr. etc. Twisted Wedges are the only 2.02" heads that you won't have to notch the stock pistons with. Run an f cam and a Holley Systemax. It's up to you which power adder to run. Nitrous will work, but will be a little more abusive. Pretty much any centrifugal blower will get you there as well. A turbo setup would work very nicely too. You have the best chance of making the most power safely with a turbo. You really don't have to go crazy with the build. About 425rwhp and 116-118mph will run pretty well into the 10s with traction.
The tranny is 100% personal preferance. A pro-shifted 5 spd would be a hell of a lot cooler than any auto, and usually a little faster, but the auto would be more consistant, reliable and easy to drive.

Thank YOu Very Very Much.

None of this really makes any sense.
Rebuilding a shortblock with good parts is not cheap, might as well get a stroker if you are paying machine shop costs..
Running 9's on a 302 is NOT easy, of course it can be done, but it's not easy.
And making the most power safely is certainly not a turbo.
And BTW, the money spend on a power adder definetely offsets the money save by not doing a stroker.

And if you only want 425rwhp why use a turbo to get it? Keep it simple 347's can make more than 425rwhp, and be far more reliable than a power adder setup.

Well i think that there is a lot of good info here on different ways to get into the tens. There are three things you can build/shoot for. FAST, RELIABLE, and CHEAP....you can pick only two. It seems like you are most concerned with fast and cheap. You have an 86 that doesnt need to be DD'd and you say you have a drag oriented suspension...a great start.

To do this and still maintain some form of reliability i would honestly start with a 351 based motor. The swap parts arent all that expensive...and the power you gain from the 50 cubes is excellent. Get a decent forged rotating assembly with 10.5:1 or 11:1 flat tops. Then all you need is a nice HCI...AFR 185's or 205's, a TFS-R intake and a custom cam and solid valvetrain and you would be knocking on the 10's all motor. I think a high compression 351 with a good HCI should be making around 425rwhp N/A. If you really need deep tens a small shot of the giggle gas would most certainly get you there.

As for the trans...i think a built C4 is your best and most consistent option.

Who tf pays a machine shop to rebuild a stock short block?? Just run the thing with all stock parts. All of the stock internals are far stronger than the stock block. If it needs rings and bearings, put them in. Putting a stroker setup in a stock block is just about the dumbest thing you can do. Now, WHEN (not if) the block splits it whipes out your expensive stroker kit.
I'm not saying it's a piece of cake to run 9s, but a stock displacement h/c/i turbo car will easily make more than enough power to run 9s. Hell, I've seen stock longblock turbo cars run well into the 9s. There's only one replacement for displacement, boost.
When I said turbo is the safest route, that's in comparison to blowers and nitrous. Yeah, a stroker motor would probably be safer than a turbo, but again, stroker in stock block = dee dee dee.

how does 118 mph run you deep into the 10's (in a 2,000 pound car maybe) 118 in a street car (3,400 pound car usually) will put you at a high 11 geez oh man come on. I run NMRA Pure Street and it is not easy by any means to get a fox to run 10's ask my wallet. This is the problem with keyboard mechanics always got the answers. Hit the track for you talk the smack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your my HERO LOL this has got to be the truest statement of the year. Everyone cant afford a dart or man o war block. IMHO go the 351W route you can get to your goal quicker. My car is far from street but can/will withstand the 30 mile True Street cruise. Also I will have a 4340 stroker kit in a stock 1969 BLOCK
dont believe the hype

I've seen MANY high 10 sec. cars running 116-118 mph. One in particular in my mind was a h/c/i, turbo, c4 full weight fox running high 10s at 117mph. The whole difference is 60ft. Ask 25th, or Bentley429 or anyone who's spent a decent amount of time at a good track. I never said easy or cheap, but he said not to worry about traction because he's already got the suspension taken care of, so I'm assuming it will hook. Yeah, the majority of 116-118mph cars run high 11s, but with 1.9 60fts... So it sounds like even though you race, you've never seen another car run at the track? If the car is coming out of the hole hard, 116mph will get you 10s. Just one example that popped into my head is foxfan's car. He ran [email protected] 1.64 60' This is a good 60' for stock suspension, but could definitely be improved upon with good suspension, so obviously 112 mph will run high 11s. Sorry it takes a race car driver 118mph to do so.
But, seing how I don't own a 10 second car myself, this is all bull**** in my imagination. I never actually go to the track, and none of this actually happens, it's all in my dreams. And because I don't own a top fuel drag car, it's impossible to run a 4 sec. 1/4 mile at 330mph. Unless you've done it yourself it's all fake...
