01 GT Broke Down This Morning

2001 GT, 51k, Automatic


I went to crank it this morning and it would turn over and die. It would run as long as my foot was on the gas... Ideas?





PS: I did notice that the Service engine soon light would come on after it died, but it may have no bearing on this.

Is there an Idle Air bypass valve on these things?

Yes there is. That is a weird problem how it happens out of nowhere. Those are very dependable cars.

Kewl. And you're right.

BUT, it has done it before maybe twice on even a warm day. And both times it finally caught and idled.


So now I'm thinking idle air bypass... Anyone else have any ideas?

Take the IAC off and spray it with carb cleaner. After it's cleaned, spray some WD40 in it. That should fix it.

The check engine light only came on because the car died and the key is in the 'on' position. It isn't related to this problem.

A Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning won't hurt while you're in there tidying up.

just whack that ****er with the handle of a screw driver. its stuck shut right now.

I think you can find one for about $45 if you want to replace. I tried cleaning mine but it lasted about a month.

Also you might want to make sure you didn't have a hose or vacuum tube come loose.

I can guarantee 100% that the issue is your IAC. Cleaning it will just be a temp fix it will happen again until you get a new one.

I wouldn't really call it work. Those are really easy to replace. I think even you can do it Strype

A loose hose to the intake tube can do the same thing. Maybe 95% sure?

I would go with iac. but I would also check everything else to lol.

I guess anything can happen, but the MAF connection is secured with a locking clip that isn't that easy to remove when you are trying to. I couldn't imagine it just falling off...
