whats a 55k mile forged piston short blockworth? Whole iin parts...worth savingblock?

Hey guys,

I know fox bodies aren't the most valuable collector cars out there but what if in 20 years an original owner (like mine) pristine (like mine) matching numbers (like mine...but not for long!) are worth serious big bucks?

Basically, I have a nice coast 306 ready to drop in, with ported e7's and a ported stock intake and jay allen cam....can't wait....but I would feel like a real idiot if I discarded the original block and 20 years later I threw away some real value.

I was thinking, how much is my 55k short block worth complete? How much are the stock e7s worth?
What if I tore it down and sold pistons, crank, e7s, spider, etc, and tucked the correct block away in my storage unit 'just in case'...? How much $$ am I giving up now in the hope that it will come back 20 years from now?

On a different note, it would be 'easier' to dopart the engine, as garage space is limited, and I can quickly tear down the old engine and sell parts on eBay and ship in boxes, versus a craigslist local pickup deal and an angry yet understanding wife forced out of her garage spot indefinately to make space for an old engine that might sell someday...

What are your thoughts?

Sell the block if your not going to use it. Fox's aren't all of a sudden going to be worth alot of money one day. I'd love for that to happen but I just don;t see it happening.

You would get more out of a low mile complete engine.

If you can keep it somewhere all oiled and wrapped up so it won't go to ****, I don't see any reason not to keep it. It's not worth a whole lot, so why not just hang onto it? I don't know if anyone's ever going to worry about a "numbers matching" fox, but I guess it would be nice to have the original ****. It would be a good spare to have anyway though in case you ever damage the bottom end or block you're putting in there.

I do not think there are True "Numbers matching" anyhow. Thats an old term from when the numbers were stamped into the block that matched some of the vin # of the car.

On our cars the block will have date codes casted in them that will correspond to the year built etc... but I do not believe that there are any numbers that would verify that a certian engine came out of a certain car.

Here's where its at. If your engine was removed, and you were standing behind it(as if standing over the tranny) you will see a flat area on the top of the block. Its the area where if you used to much RTV on the lower intake, this is where it woudl squish out. Anyway, along that 3 inch or so long ledge, you'll find all the number from your VIN. You know, the last 8 or so numbers.
