Need to remove powder coat or paint?

I tried a few different "professional grade" paint strippers at about $10 a pint and they all sucked, or suffice to say the required scraping to get the job done. Then i got a tip about using Permatex gasket remover....and holy crap is this stuff hardcore.

This is after the paint stripper wouldn't touch the insides of the spokes, and after 15 minutes of sitting.

The best part is that it's only like $3.50 a can vs. the $5 a can for the spray paint stripper and it works 100% better.

Yeah they'll make short work on Ponys. The issue i'm having is just that there's so many little nooks and crannies in these rims. The Pony being mostly flat should be a breeze.


In fact that gives me an idea....i've never seen Ponys stripped down and polished..

Unbelievable....that stuff is fantastic. Also i'm super thrilled about the 2 white rims as they seam to be original white rims and that's only one later of crap that needs stripped off.

now you need a pressure washer.

*takes wheels to a self service car wash and press wash all the chit off.

yup that stuff sure does work. I used it to clean paint off a reverse lens on our dihatsu mini truck, I walked away for a couple minutes, came back and it started eating through the plastic

think that stuff would work well in striping the clear off my 10 holes? or whatever factory coating is on em?

I used some real expensive paint stripper to get paint off a part once and it worked great. I put the stripper on for a few minutes then just hosed it off and all the paint was gone. I forget what the stuff is called though. I'll have to keep in mind the permatex gasket remover for when I refinish my gt 40 intake.

Yeah there's another guy on there with the '79 that just got wrecked, he has a set of 16s that i wanted to get but he got to them before me. I want a set of 16s for my Mustang. And yeah i would say if this will eat off the powdercoat it'll eat off the clear from 10 holes since that's probably just automotive clear coat. Powder coat is baked on, i doubt clear coat is.

Man for $4 a can you can't beat this stuff. The time i've saved just being able to spray it on instead of brushing it and worrying about it dripping is enough to justify having to buy more cans of it. This is gonna be what i use to clean metal parts from now on. I can't wait for a warm day so i can hit my turbo housing with it.

yupp i traded a guy on there for some pony wheels..then he decided to sell them to him.

i paid 50 bucks for them at a swap meet

Would you really need to pressure-wash 'em to get the gunk off, or would a plain ol' garden hose sprayer cranked full-blast be enough to do the trick? I've suddenly got a crazy urge to strip the Ponies on the Pervertible, polish 'em, and then clearcoat the hell out of 'em...

Only thing is, I dunno what I'd do about the centercaps. I'm afraid that gasket remover stuff would just eat the hell out of the plastic...

Where'd you get that stuff?

It's Permatex gasket remover...same brand as most of the RTV's out there. You can get it at any parts store.


I wouldn't use it on plastic...then again i'm using a tooth brush to clean the spokes out and it isn't hurting that, but still you'd have a bare plastic center cap and that would suck. If some company started reproducing aluminum center caps for Ponys they'd make a fortune.
