Cold Air intake Q's waiting for A's

Well, either go with a JLT or K&N CAI. The CAI will help alittle bit more with a T/B and intake plenum. However....one thing that nobody says is that if you get the K&N or the JLT short ram intake when you go to the drag strip you can take off your passenger side headlight and it will act as a ram air system....helps alittle bit too. The fenderwell ones seem pointless to me.

I don't understang, my HP claims are not magazine..they're pretty realistic figures.

maybe to you they are, as for me, they are not.

Ive personally tested the bbk cold air kit in 2001(yes, fenderwell kit with a bend). We had a 800DA at Navasota Raceway, and swapped a stock airbox with kn to the bbk cold air kit, and it hurt perfomance. My best run came with the stock airbox and kn(9.18 in my sig) that night. I made 3 runs with each. 60fts all were in the 1.98-2.02 range. MPH did not increase. I dont feel that the newer kits offer much gain, if any over the stock elbow and airbox.

I tested a 70mmtb at CXI in 2001 on my ported PI headswap car. Gain? NADDA. .5hp I believe, nothing under the curve.

You might have your own experiences at the track and on the dyno swapping these parts. My experience is they do nothing.

The gain from a cold air kit and catback is going to come from the better flowing air filter and better flowing mufflers on a stock or bolt on car. Not the elbow, or the pipes. The mandrel bends really only help when you start moving more air through the car.

yea..which is why i don't use BBK crap on my car. I can see how a CHROME intake with a BEND will cause you to lose power..
My kn came with a dyno sheet..same time of day, both with the engine at the same temp. shows i think it was a 10HPgain, but i knocked 5 down. Realistically- i think 5 hp is possible with an intake. its not noticable- but very possible.

please dont believe what a company sends you, or even make up your own logic as to what you "think" it makes. Mods dont work that way. Thats misinformation. Once you strap your car to a dyno and make multiple runs, or have track info to back it up, then I would start making HP claims.

Im just not one for throwing out claims without evidence to back it up. Thats why I personally test all the stuff I put on my car, and try to keep the variables to a minimum to get real world results.

The thing is, logically it makes more horsepower. More air/colder air increases hp. Now, the thing is, how much more air flow does this give over the stock piece? Maybe not a ton, but some. Honestly I don't believe that a CAI really makes it's peak power until it's actually moving, thus this can't really be proven on a dyno. However something most everyone says is that the throttle response is alittle quicker which is nice. The reason why most people don't get one is because for 200+ dollars it's biggest pro is that it looks cooler, and the only people that will notice are at a car show, and IMO a CAI doesn't have anywhere near the same appeal as seeing a blower in the engine. An exhaust may not yield much more hp then a CAI, but atleast you are getting a noticeable sound and sometimes a better looking exhaust out back. CAI's are definately not a bad mod, but not going to give the instant gratification like for instance a gear swap would.

i completley agree. My KN intake didn't do jack. But it sounds cool. and it whistles. and it looks cool.
After i put it on, i was like "welp, thats a waste of money"...but if i had to do it again- i'd still buy it. That filter on the KN..its just so.. Huge. like, ya know?

my 3rd 2v mustang. I wont put one near my car again.

If you want to drop money for a "swoosh" effect, cool, or you can just remove the stock silencer for free.

I've got a C&L on mine:

The pipe is pretty huge, as is the air filter (which is in dire need of a cleaning). It sounds pretty cool and looks good. I guess that's about it.

BTW - Is it true that C&Ls cause the A/F ratio to be a little lean?

How do you know this "test" wasnt on a car with a stock air filter with 30,000 miles on it?

Sorry, but I agree with winters on this one. The stock tubing is more than capable of supplying needed airflow on a mostly stock engine. Maybe with full intake mods, heads and cams...but otherwise, no.

The stock inlet tubing is HUGE for stock. Manufacturer dyno sheets dont mean ****. Even if its from the same day. They are in this to sell, thats why the numbers look so good.

With that said, I would buy JLT over another brand.
