302 to a 331 ?

This sort of thing has been done countless times with stock blocks...you can either go the route of purchasing the stroker kit and taking your motor along with the kit you buy to a machine shop who will do all machine and assembly work for you....or buy the motor in short block or even crate engine form from any of the various sources available...the Mustang aftermarket is huge. Do some research on heads, intakes, cams and all other various supporting mods for your project.

If done for the right reasons, going with a 331 can be preferable to going with a 347. However, the majority of gear-heads will be better off going with a 347. They have 16 more cubes and therefore will make more power, all else equal.

As mentioned do your homework, plan out the entire build, pick a block and internals that meet your requirements, and then find a good machine shop that you have faith in. Determine how much you expect everything to cost, then set aside twice that and you'll be ready for the project.

its easier and sometimes cheaper just to buy an already built stroker bottom end. i got my 347 shortblock built by woody at fordstrokers.com. if yor gonna do a blown 331 or 347, you should prolly buy a block that can handle the power and thats gonna run you almost 2k extra. IMO if you wanna go the blower or turbo route, you should just stay with a 302. If yor gonna go with the regular stock block n/a stroker route or any route for that matter i hope you have something other than stock h/c/i

What would be a better h/c/i combo for the 347 stroker than what I currently run on my 302?
Current h/c/i is ported stock heads, b303 cam, and gt-40 intake. I know that there are many other parts that are much better, but what are some individual opinions on what combo to run?

AFR 185 heads, custom cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM 2 or Victor EFI (depends on LOTS of things) or even a TFS Intake. Do not forget bigger fuel injectors, Throttle Body, MAF...........ect............

i agree or at least spend 2400 on a tfs top end kit. you can substitude the stage 1 cam out for a stage 2 if you call summit. i run a stage 2. that kit is complete and flows close to afr 185 heads

Here is a suggestion

Rebuild the 302 using some light hyper pistons and put a set of RHS 200 heads, custom cam and a track heat intake on it. You'll make 425 at the flywheel N/A. The motor will idle smooth, not load up, and pull to 7K. Save your dough for an early, Mexican, or aftermarket block (BOSS 302 would work just fine) then do the 347 with the same parts but a new cam and make 550 N/A.

You could do the 347 in a roller block but you are pushing your luck at 550 and the tune is critical at that power level in a roller block.

Oh and IMO the only reason to do a 331 is if you are an inexperianced builder as there are some things that are "special" about a 347. Opinions vary on this subject but there are two things that are NOT a concern. Built right a 347 will not use oil and the rod stroke ratio is not an issue.

Because it's not worth starting argument/long-winded-discussion #1423 on this subject, I'll just say that I completely concur with the bolded portion of this quote, and in the OPs case, there is no reason to build a 331.:nice:

If you want a stoker that will last.... go with the 331.. but don't go the cheap way out buy good stuff man!!! If its a pinks show, just buy something thats cheap or on sale!!!!
