Hey I recently got a 1994 Mustang GT with a 95' 5.0L 302. I have few mods consisiting of an aftermarket cool air intake and maybe a catback exhaust. What mods do you suggest I equip first? and what would produce the the most gain in hp and power in general?

I am new to the SN95 Stangs, however, generally speaking the first mods to a modern unibody car should be subframe connectors and gears. The first makes the car more stable and stronger, to better handle more power, and the gears make best use of what you have now.

Then, being a small block Ford man, I have always started engine mods with headers and exhaust. Free flowing headers and exhaust gain everything that makes life worth living...;) Power, sound, torque, cooler engine temps, and even MPGs. Gotta love it.

Another vote for gears if you don't have them. You'll have to check your ratio yourself - you might already have 'em.

An O/R pipe can be a nice exhaust upgrade (emissions and on-road use issues aside).

Been there and done all this. I Put 3.90's in it (keep ur 1st gear and rock to 60mph), forget the CAI - waste of money, pulleys..maybe.. then H/C/I ..BETTER GRIP TIRES ..with a reasonable cam and then you will spend $3500 roughly and be a little bit faster than the new GT's.. but have a real fun and fast car.

no one mod is going to gain you big power. Usually its a series of mods together that makes the biggest difference. Its better to pick one area and work on that such as just doing the cat back wont net you much but also doing the mid pipe and headers will make a good difference. As said before Gears and Subframes are a good place to start too

So main suggest are redoing the gears i think i have 4.11's maybe 3.73's not so sure....but also the exhaust (long tube headers with an x or h pipe) and i heard catalyic convertors restrict air flow and prevent power so is it something I should follow? Also is redoing the intake manifold, by widing the throttle body and putting in an elderblock intake manifold a good gain?

If you live a state where emissions are not too bad, remove that stock h pipe with the four cats......BIG restriction...

hell man i got a 95 mustang gt and the first couple things i did was full exhaust and a ring and pinion, i chose a 4:10. but the only problem with that is is thats its cheap to buy but its costs a bit to put it in. i got it in for 250 at performance shop in north college hill :/ but if your gonna get gears its best to get ford racing cause its basically direct replacement.

When making your first modifications you have to think about where you want the car to be years down the road to save yourself money. You can go ahead a drop 200 bucks on a cold air intake, but if someday you plan on supercharging it you just wasted 200 bucks. You can go with a simple head, cam, and intake, but what happens if someday you want to go with nitrious then you need to get some different heads to do it right. You need to make upgrades that your not going to throw away someday because you go bigger. Gears are a great idea. Unless your going to a straight drag car if you go with 4.10s you will never need to change them. Also someone said a Short throw shifter this also is a great idea. Its a great idea and should never need to be changed. Tires are a great way to hook up, but make sure you dont spend a fortune on tires just to next year want different rims, and then have to buy tires all over again. A good rear suspension is a great idea to help you launch the car, if your looking to race the car alot. I have seen a car with 100 less horsepower win in the quarter mile because someone had slicks and some suspension work. Just make sure to plan ahead, there is no reason to buy shorty headers, just because you only have 300 bucks right now and its a simple bolt on if someday you want a full 3 inch exaust with longtube headers. Just plan ahead and you can save yourself alot of cash.

I say short throw shifter, because that really changes how much fun the car is to drive. Everything else adds a few horsepower here and there that you really don't notice. The shifter changes your whole perception of how the car drives. Don't skip the free mods, bump the timing and rip out the donkey dick.
