Snapped intake bolt

Those damned easy outs never work, at least for me. I worked in the auto repair industry for many years and I could never get it to work. Best to get some hardened carbide bits and drill it out and retap it or helicoil it as suggested.

I was thinking that if the bolt head broke that there may be a stub that can be gripped if the intake was removed.

depending on where it "snapped....either way..intake comes off , if there is a nub...tack weld another bolt...(used this method before :rlaugh:) or drill helicoil....hell my trans has about 5 helicoils in it due to short bolts stripping the threads......2 to 3 hour job taking your time......

It may not be the issue but it does not take much for a leak and pressure is not being placed on that section of the intake......worth doing...
Plus it would drive me nuts thinking about it....

I tried to use a ez out on mine. Did not work actually made things WORSE the ezout broke.

Had to remove the heads and take it to a machine shop, they kind of put the fear in me to not do that again. :?

They where able to helicoil it.

What did that end up costing you to get the machine shop to fix it? I was out earlier taking my explorer motor apart getting it ready for some routine rebuild work and I broke the passenger/front lower intake bolt in the head. Not enough to grab with vise grips either!

15$ I spent that much on drill bits and ezout previously, not mention a lot of time wasted time drilling carefully.

Happened to me and i removed the whole intake. ARP Studded intake bolts wont break no matter how crappy your torque wrench is. What i did was after removing the intake i PB Blastered the broken bolt....then heated it up a little with a torch. Then using a hammer and a wood chisel tool. I wacked the edge of the broken bolt to get it to reverse spin. Oddly enough ive gotten this to work a couple of times. Rule of thumb is if you're putting a performance intake, or heads on your car then do yourself a favor and get decent bolts.

Since the intake bolt goes straight up and down theres usually a good little amount of meat on the bolt still if it snaps off in the head. But you will have ro remove the intake. I hate using Helicoils, Drills Etc. if i don't have to.

I broke a bolt on the front driverside head After alot of drilling and using a extractor still nothing so We drilled to re tap it and got the pieces out but the threads wouldn't hold So I just got a longer bolt to reach the good threads and holds torque great. Still no leaks. :nice:
