Cat back for the 93

Here's a clip of a mellow drive by. This was before the stroker, with just my heads and a cam, same intake/carb setup. Maybe it IS just my car because a lot of people around here say it doesn't sound like normal Magnaflows...but they're just the polished stainless case mufflers with Magnaflow stamped into them, so i dunno. Maybe it's my X pipe making the difference?

Your car has always sounded awesome...and I have never heard another Magnaflow car sound anything even close to yours. My buddy put a 2-cat X and Magnaflows on his 88 GT years ago and I always thought it was too quiet...it was deep but never really opened up like my 3-Chamber Flows did.

They make aluminum exhaust pieces? Interesting. I guess they would be more lightweight, would dissipate heat better, and would never rust, but ... seems like it'd be too soft a metal to use for exhaust, given the conditions. (Flexing, road debris/scraping, etc.) Or did you mean aluminized exhaust? Just curious.

Yeah, "aluminized" would be the correct term.

However, I'm not a fan of the tailpipes on their catback system - those tips are hideous, IMO.

I have...or had a Magnaflow catback and have the older style 3 inch tailpipes.I know the newer ones look horrible.

Flowmaster American Thunder! I love the muscle car sound and have zero drone. I have a cat hpipe also.

Im looking to get a catback for my 91 notch. 2 months ago I put brand new bbk headers and bbk catted x pipe. I was wondering if anyone knows if the Flowmaster American Thunder would be a nice combo. I heard good things about that catback and it looks good to me with the 2.5 pipe.

Trust me, the fitment on Flowmaster's cat-backs is CRAP. Sure, the 40-series mufflers they use in the American Thunder kit sound good ... on the OUTSIDE of the car ... but they drone like a mofo on the inside. If you're into drone, then by all means go for it, but if you actually plan to drive your car any long distances or on a daily basis, you'll probably get sick of it pretty quick.

Again, Frankenstang's Capri has a Flowmaster cat-back on it behind an off-road X-pipe, and it does sound pretty decent overall, but they're the Delta series mufflers - they don't drone, but they're also more quiet, and their flow characteristics SUCK (about as bad as stock mufflers). Plus, it took some bending and beating on the hangers and cutting an inch or so off one tailpipe to get the tailpipes to fit straight and even. Flowmaster welds the flow tubes to their mufflers in advance, so you have almost no room for adjustment ... which really sucks because no two cars are really 100% the same when it comes to making things line up straight.

I'm running the Flowmaster American Thunder with the Super 44 muffs (black case) and an O/R H-pipe and I love it. Has good idle and really opens up at half or more throttle. Has a lil bit of drone at cruise with the o/r h pipe but had no drone before with the catted h pipe. And someone earlier said something about fitment was bad, but mine bolted right up to everything nice and neat...no cutting or bending required. I must have gotten lucky. But for the price and quality, i dont think you can go wrong with Flowmaster.

Magna flow makes Mustangs sound like boats. I hate that racket. A guy took off from the light in a 2V 99-04 yesterday...sounded horrible. Go with Flowmasters. Best all around.

My 86 has the Flowmaster American Thunder system on it. I don't really care for it, but some of my co-workers say it sounds good.

At the same time it is not the sound I want for my 93. That is why i posted this in the first place.

I change mufflers like some people change underwear. I've had most muffler combos available except for a few of the more expensive ones like Bassani, Borla and Spintech. Everything else i've had with an H, X and Pro Chamber. The only setup i've had that i honestly did NOT like was Dynomax Race bullets....whereas a lot of people love them, i felt they were just all noise and no tone whatsoever. I know what you mean about it not being the sound you want...my buddy has my old Flowmaster 1 chambers and every time he starts his car i think to myself "damn that sounds good" but i know that driving it and dealing with the crazy loudness and insane drone is not what i want. Another friend has Mac, and i LOVE those, and i'm actually looking for a decent used set just so i have them to fall back on if i ever get tired of the Magnaflows. I think for now i'm sticking with them just because they're so different from 1) everything else i've ran and 2) i don't wanna sound like every other Mustang around here.

I have one more question. I think that when I rebuild the 93 it will end up with an HP Performance turbo kit on it. Therefore this is something to consider in chosing a cat back now.

Any ideas?

For a turbo setup you want the most straight through mufflers you can find...like bullets or Magnaflow/Dynomax. Stay away from chambered mufflers.

I'd ask around with more people who have ran turbo than me...but that's what most of the Merkur guys run (either bullets or Magnaflows or nothing at all). I've never had a turbo Mustang but you basically want the most free flowing muffler you can find, which will be the straight shot through the muffler, which is going to be a glass pack style muffler with a straight through tube like Magnaflow and Dynomax make. The Dynomax bullets are probably the best option but they're also probably the loudest option.
