timing cover dimensions

OK I know I have heard there are all the same, however I need to make sure before I throw another 200 bucks at a cooling issue.

I currently have my timing cover, brackets, and water pump from my 260 on the new motor. What is the measurement from the engine block mounting surface to the water pump mounting surface. I am trying to determine whether changing the from setup to a 1966 and up from cover may address some of my timing issues.

I have the original from my first 5.0 conversion, nut it is for a efi setup and seems thinner.

When looking at waterpump dimensions I noticed that the newer pumps are about .25 of in inch thicker So I am wondering if the matching timing cover is thinner?

I'm not sure I understand the the question, or rather the root question.
Do you have a fitment issue with your timing gear? Is the new motor over heating? When you say the difference in timing covers is .25, you mean an actual 1/4 inch?

Are you running a 5.0 motor, or the 260?

You could be comparing apples and oranges. The 64 & early 65 had an aluminum water pump, while the late 65-69 had an iron water pump. These two are totally different in every way, not interchangeable, and the thickness of the cover and of the pump should NOT be compared, unless you assemble them and measure from the block to the fan mounting flange.

Yeah thats kind of what I am looking for. I originally took the front cover and brackets and installed them on a 89 roller motor. About 3 years ago I bought a new ford motor and just installed the old setup on the new motor. Well ever since I had the car with the original v-8 260 it had the same front cover and water pump. I am considering converting it to the newer cast iron pump to see if this may be an issue. What ever is left after ruling out all other items must be the root of my problems.

I have never seen a front cover for an iron pump off a car so I am assuming the thickness is different. I can get water pump dimensions so I can compare to my setup. I just cannot get front cover dimensions w/o purchasing it.

So I need the thickness from the block to where the water pump mates with the timing cover. A good reference would be where the pump, cover, and block have the water outlets.

How about this has anyone run into problems converting and an aluminum water pump front cover to a cast iron front cover?

I run the 66 timing cover on a roller block with a edelbrock high flow pump, FRRP underdrive crank & alt pulley but the water pump pulley is too shallow (or the snout of the WP is too long) for the underdrive pulley to work so there is a mid 70's granada pulley on the water pump.

Where are you finding the water pump dims and how many variations are there?
