I am new to posting on this forum but I have been doing alot of research and have gotten great knowledge to get my 66 mustang to move along.

I am stuck now....I just put a 5.0 in my 66 and bolting up a C4 transmission.

The C4 was out of a 4x4 truck. I removed the transfer case and now the motor and transmission are in my car right now I am just waiting on a mount bracket. This is my question.

In the picture below, what is the "part" I need called to hook up the transmission to the drive shaft? It is called a tail shaft? Output shaft?

Dont mind that bracket...

I figured everything else out but this domestic thing is new, so bare with me.

Any help is greatly appreciated

You need a c4 out of a car. I would recommend a 26 spline c4 out of a passenger car. I dont know the proper length for a 66 mustang c4 (using standard mount and driveshaft) but it seems a quick google will tell you which years and bodys are compatible. Short answer I dont think you can just bolt a new tail housing to that tranny and call it a day.

Your 4x4 poutput shaft to WAY TOO SHORT to use in a standard car application. To Use that transmission It would have to be completely disassembled and have output shaft changed to the "standard" car length and then you could put a "standard" extension housing on it. As sits right now you cannot use it.

Yep, that's a short transmission configured to attach to a transfer case. It will be cheaper and easier just to get a proper trans. The Mustang also requires a different lever on the trans, upward for the floor shift rather than downward for the column shift. It is possible to buy this lever if all you can find is column shift transmissions. Costs about $70.

Find a C4 that looks like this:

The tranmission is actually from a racer his name is Rory Cambell. He has a race truck. This transmission was built by Russ Moore Transmissions out in Indiana. Its a fully fully built tranny ready to handle 500+hp, according to the techs at Russ Moore.

I figured I a C4 tail extension housing, that's the part im missing.
I also need to get a custom drive shaft made. I am not going to part ways with this transmission unless I totally have to.

I figured with the tail extension housing, custom driveshaft it should work fine. I am also doing a floor shifter, not column. Someone correct me if im wrong.

You CAN NOT use that transmission AS IS. To use that in a car you have to use the Car output shaft & extension housing. To change the shaft the transmission must be dissambled. It might be a great transmission but as it sits it will not work for you in a car.

Thank you, I went to the local transmission shop. I am going to have a longer output shaft installed so it will match my existing drive shaft.

Thanks for all your help!
