71-73 coupe to fastback?

I have had my 73 coupe for almost 10 years and there is personal value to it as I built it with my father who past away a couple years ago. I will never sell the car, although it is not my prefered body style. There is a local guy who has an entire Mach roof section from A pillars to rear of trunk. I am looking for thoughts, advice, input. I know this is popular with 67-68 these days.

I am fairly competent with welding/fabrication work. I am also building this as a street/strip car so I am not too worried about interior fitment with a back seat and panels. And I am aware that pretty much all of the glass will need to be switched out.

So am I crazy or is this a sane thought? I feel confident this is possible but could be wrong.

Yes, the windshield, door, quarter and rear glass will be needed. You'll need the donor roof and supports all the way down to the floor of the interior, top of wheelhouse, and trunk floor.

Couldnt I fabricate those inner supports? Something along these lines..



And do something similar with the supports that are inbetween the trunk and backseat area. Something similar to the picture would give plenty of structure correct?

I'm sorry to hear about your father, but I always love seeing people do meaningful things. If I can get everything apart easily enough I'll snap some pictures on weds.. I think this is a pretty cool project, and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. If the pulled it off 36 years ago in the factories, it can absolutely be done.

That would be awesome downwardspiral. And I think I may be the first to do this with our era of mustang. Some may say it is because there is no following but it seems like there are enough of us out there.

Hey man, I didn't forget about you.. I brought my camera today to take the pictures and forgot the memory card. I was able to take 1 picture but now I can't find the cord to connect it and get the picture off . I'll post it tonight if I can find the cord, but if not I'll take another tommorow. I didn't want to take the whole rear section apart because the headliner would need to come off, but the picture shows the basic setup of the bracing. Sorry it took so long .

Here ya go.. Remembered the memory stick today. The headliner is stapled in place nicely, so sorry.. you wont see that part .

Downward, thanks alot for all your help and going out of your way to get me some pictures. I believe this is going to be a winter project as I would like to enjoy the car over the summer.

Are you referring to placement and alignment of the roof panel or finishing off the interior to a stock nature? I believe I will do a fastback headliner but will probably ditch the rear seat for some clean looking aluminum panels.

I meant don't just slap the fastback roof on it, use the proper internal peices. I was just talking about the structure. I wasn't referring to the interior, however I would go full interior as well. The seat is not that heavy and it looks much better than any of the rear seat delete setups I have seen.
