Automatic Trans starter in 3 speed Standard Trans

Here is an odd one. Had to replace my starter in my 65 3 speed atandard shift trans. bought one from Auto Zone and it did fit into the hole, took it back and ordered a second one same thing no fit. Returned it and went to Advance Auto Parts, there part # was the same as Auto Zone then an Older fellow (sales Manager) took one look at my old starter and said that is a starter for an Automatic, He had an automatic Trans starter in stock so he pulled it and it was identical to my old starter. Took it home and lo and behold it Fit. Who would have thought a standard shift trans woul use an automatic trans starter. Good old Ford.:flag:

I. also am confused. I posted a question here and on another site about what starter to use for my upper 90s 5.0 with a 90-92 T5/T5 bell/157 tooth flywheel in my 68 Coupe that had a 289/3-speed manual. A member at the other site said I couldn't use my manual starter, but instead needed to use one for an automatic or from a 90-92.
An interesting twist?
So I took the starter from my 68/289/3-speed manual to the parts store to compare with one listed for an automatic, one for a 92 and one listed for a 68 manual. From what I can tell I had a starter for an automatic in my manual car? The plus side is that it appears I don't need to buy a starter, but I'm wondering how my car functioned properly with the wrong starter.
I share your wonder/confusion,
Gene

It's not a "manual vs. auto" choice. It's actually simpler than that. From a catalog I keep handy:

There are two choices:

64½-67 260, 289, 302, manual with 157T flywheel, all C4 auto-
matic, 68-73 289, 302, 351 with automatic Starter

Alternately:

68-73 289,302,351 manual trans with 164T flywheel Starter

OK, they list it by dimensions rather than application. Originally, of course, all 64-67 260/289 had the same starter, regardless of engine. Nowadays, people have assembled these cars from parts so much you have to be careful.

Your chart leaves out the 200. Which uses the same starter as the 390/428. Go figure.

That may be why, I have a 157-tooth flywheel
