What kind of block is this? Pics...

A friend of mine gave this block to me with timing chain cover, forged crankshaft, valve covers and oil pan. He said that it's a 4.6L Windsor Aluminum block. I'm going to clean it up and start a build with it. Tell me what you can about what you see here.

The best way to identify a block is by the part number. Do a google search for the part number and you can probably figure it out. It looks to me like a Teksid block. Notice it has 6 bolts per main.

As for having a forged crank? You'll have to check the part number and such too. It is very common for the teksid engine to come from the lincoln Mark VIII, which has a cast crank, but the cobra got a forged crank.
 
Looks a bit like the aluminum block used in the 96-01 Cobra. I think it's a Romeo. The main caps have 4-bolts instead of 2-bolts and dowels (though I'm not positive the W engine used the dowel arrangement on the aluminum block...) Also, there's no "W" I can see cast into it from the pictures you show.

Could be wrong but it looks like it uses jackscrews on the sides of the main caps which puts it earlier than 1999.

Looks like there are some numbers cast into the block on the driver's side near the 3rd main cap jackscrew. What do these read? Are there any other casting numbers elsewhere on it?
 
Teksid... that sounds good! I'll look for the numbers today. I didn't see a "W" cast anywhere. The guy that gave me this stuff is an instructor at my automotive school. He has some other blocks and stuff. He gave me this stuff so he could get some usage out of my garage. He lives in an apartment and I have a house with a large garage. I'm finishing my Diagnostics class tomorrow then into the final 12 weeks of building engines. So this is where I'll learn how and what I want to do to this engine. I'm going with 4v heads of course. I plan to build a trailer queen with this engine in a '96/'97 GT Coupe auto. I want those years for the clock pod on the dash. And I want this style and do a Cobra R kit on it. All black. Project NiteMare. I'll post as I go. I won't really be starting on it till I finish school at Christmas.

If you had this block... tell me what you would do to it to get what horsepower? I'm NOT going to supercharge it, turbo it or nitrous it. I want 100% engine.

What bore? What stroke? What cams? What anything else...

Okay... part number is RF-F2LE 6015 AG/HC and on one of the main caps is casted "WCP" and a "5"... Soooo.... it's a Teksid. What does the "WCP" mean? I know what "WAP" is but not "WCP".

You can build to 7000 shifts for one budget.

Double that for 7500 shifts (where the 4V comes alive)

Double that again for 8000 shifts (where the 4V are king)

Its going to cost a chunk of change for a NA 4V that runs really good. Typically a set of 4V heads reworked with aftermarket cams and springs is a good $4K to start, you can spend a ton more on these as well.
 
I don't know man, I'd almost rather build a nice 2V engine. If you get a cobra rotating assembly with the flat pistons, a pair of Trick Flow heads with the smaller combustion chambers, and a decent set of cams you'd be near 12:1 comp and have yourself a nasty NA 2V engine that would run strong all the way to 7000 rpm's.

Like Nick said, if you choose to build a NA 4V get ready to spend some money because IMO it would only be worth it if you were planning on spinning it to 7500-8000 RPM

stock bore maybe .008" max over. stock stroke with a kellogg crank, billet CNC rods, 2618 pistons. 1000-1200 hp will not stress that block.
 
I've read some were before that romeo was the only to produce the aluminum block, and windsor optid out thought that they would not last and they would money. But the artical could be wrong. Ill search to find it if I do ill post a link
 
Also here's what I know and I add the corrected part to the remoeo part, here it goes. All 4v blocks had 6bolt mains except 03-04svt that had 4. All 99 and earlier blocks were cast in italy by fiat subsidiary Teksid SpA, since 96 all 4.6 4v manufactured for use in the cobra have been hand built at the remeo plant. So remeo didn't cast them they jus assembled them, but like I said windsor had nothing to do with aluminun engines for ford. Hope this helps.
