So I'm getting ready to put the engine back in but I really don't know to much about the internal except what th PO said and he didn't build it the PO did so he didn't know to much either. I do know it runs strong and sound great, has a pretty hefty lop to the cam with edelbrock intake, BBL 70mm TB, BBK fuel rails & shorty headers.
I was a little surprised when I pulled the valve covers and didn't find roller cam ? I ran the block nubers and it's a 1985 block, go figure. Was this engine originally a roller cam? I can't find any numbers on the heads either but they do have dual springs. Not sure what I have here.

Is the lifter bosses drilled for the spyder that holds the roller lifters in?
the engine is all together, only took off the valve covers and upper intake.
valve train looks very stock except for the dual valve springs.
The PO told me it had an x cam installed ?? The rockers look stock.
I guess you can't really tell if it's a roller without taking off the lower intake .

Is there not a date code on the block? I thought there was but don't know where it would be.
I didn't mean lifter bosses, I meant to say the lifter valley, in the center of the valley should be a couple threaded holes.
Can't believe someone didn't take the opportunity to correct me, they should be deducted one beer each!

As stated by the others, you will not be able to know what cam is in the engine or what type of cam by simply looking under the valve covers. The factory used stamped steel pedestal style rockers with factory roller cams, so don't discount what you have just yet.

Thanks for looking, I guess I'll never find out for sure unless I have to open it up in the future. I really only want to know out of curiosity, I'm very satisfied with the performance.
Dropped the engine into the car today and started hooking everything up, should be running tomorrow. Yahooooo !!!!!
Took some photos today of the install but can't find them on my sd card ????

I will look to confirm but I think the push rods from a non roller are longer than a roller, meaning you could cheat and compare a non roller to yours, just a thought from someone that 'fiddels around' with my car, I wouldn't put someone else in danger by working on their's.

Yea the date code is for a 1985 engine E5AE C3B
I'm a little confused because the firing order is connected like an HO engine, some where I read if the cam is changed the firing order will have to be changed also. ???? Not sure about that.
These are the only 2 photos I took with the valve covers off, not sure you can see much detail.

Well I took some more pics of the engine finally in place and it's looking good. most all wiring and hoses are connected, need to install drive shaft and rehang the exhaust. Hoping to get this thing drivable tomorrow but I have some running to do and not sure if I will have enough time. engine in.gif
