I have a 93 purchased about a month ago needs some cosmetic works and in the process of build the motor for it. But it has a 87-89 steering wheel, I have been searching to see why that would have been done but can't find anything on it. I just want to see if there was any advantage to that or not. I plan on going back EFI with it cause I would like to have cruise control. Anyway, if anyone has any information on why that has been a big thing I would love to learn why!

How hard it would be to go back all depends on how the swap was done. Was the airbag stuff removed? If so you'll need to soruce that all. You'll need the 90-93 wheel and a 1993 column. I think the electrical connectors are unique to 1993 but you'll want to do some searching on this. The 1993 clockspring will be virtually unobtainium, so hopefully you can find a parts car to steal the parts from.

The older wheel should have cruise control buttons on it which you could adapt your cc wires to if you still have them.

Other then that the system is the same and should be interchangeable I would think.

Off top of my head there are these parts of the system

Speed control servo (mounted under driver fender) and connects to throttle body via cable. Also connects to the speed control reservoir and manifold through check valves.
VSS
Switch on the clutch peddle if manual, believe it is called the Speed control dump valve
Speed control amplifier (box under dash driver side)

The older wheel should have cruise control buttons on it which you could adapt your cc wires to if you still have them.

The older wheels use a contact disk and metal spring loaded fingers to touch the plate. Here's the column mounted contact switch on the earlier cars if it's not installed on the OP's column already. It can probably be adapted to keep the horn and CC functional on the older wheel.

Just want to add my opinion, the airbag wheels are the BEST looking to me. I would pass on an 87-89 car based on the steering wheel alone.

I have to agree. I am not fond of the non airbag wheel. Does the none airbag wheel make it easier to swap to an aftermarket wheel too?

I have an air bag wheel sitting in the garage and i do agree between 87-89 or 90-93 I’m all about the 90-93 air bag wheel it’s a much better looking wheel, yet I just swapped in a momo on mine and no plans on going back. I still need to figure out the horn thing though at some point !!

Reddevil91 I am thinking of installing a MOMO wheel and wondering if you can share photos here of it installed? Thanks.

Im quiet indecisive on if I like the non airbag vs the airbag. I do like some of the aftermarket wheels I've been seeing but I'm really wanting cruise control. And now considering finding a way to hook that up that would be a button off of the steering wheel somehow and still making the inside of the car nice and not butched

So I did my swap with momo wheel and hub. I installed it and as mentioned in here with the air bag wheel column there is a pretty decent gap that imo doesn’t look good. So what I did is there is a small round piece behind the original wheel, I’m guessing it’s the clock spring thingamajig not sure but a large unraveling occurred. When I finally opened it up. I cut the ridges off and smoothed it down with the dremel. Out it back on, screwed it back in place and it was perfect clearance now for the new hub, filled the gap and all worked out well. I did kinda scratch it up a little being in a hurry, but it’s really not that noticeable anymore since everything is mounted.
