Thinking about switching back to NA, need help with a recipe.

Recipe for naturally aspirated 400rwhp & 400rwtq, broad flat torque for a street car. I have no funds for an aftermarket block. All I have to start with is my stock 302 engine and a 5spd.

Will a 347cid get me there with good heads and custom cam?

$5k'ish budget and doing the work myself.

I already have tuning taken care of with my Pimp, already have the fuel pump and other small ancillary parts.

331 if your going to twist it hard, 347 if not. Big good flowing heads +300cfm, 10.5:1pump gas, matching cam, intake and free flowing exhaust. Should have no problem making your power goals.

Box r intake, 11r or afr 205 heads, headers and 3in exhaust and a decent cam will get you there. No problem.

Compression is key too.

Well just my 2 cents but blowers, while fast, require lots of maintenance. Plus they elevate the stock feel, and finally suffer from extreme heat soak from time to time. I know not everyone but some do.

Hey man, I’ve said this before in here... years ago, but there is a video out there of an edelbrock package on a 347 that made ~ 500/500 on an engine dyno. They played it on HP TV or one of those shows on powerblock a long time ago. It was actually at the Edelbrock facility and Vic Jr was in the video. It was a carb set up, matching heads, cam intake, carb, etc... but I don’t see why you couldn’t get a similar package for efi. People go nuts for tfs stuff, but Vic knew his business. And when you use the parts he matched it made really good power. I will scratch around and see if I can find the vid. Last time I looked for it I couldn’t find it.

Horsepower and engine power are great shows, and they have some really simple and proven combos they put together.

Really any good top end combo is capable of making over 400/400 rwhp/tq out of the box nowadays. Only limitation is your wallet.

Yup.

I still maintain that a SBE 351 with a well matched top end package will do that all day long. There was a thread on Corral a while ago of results from people using trickflow's 11R heads on SBE 302s and 351s. With the right parts, there were some seriously impressive results.

And lest we forget @NIKwoaC who managed something like 330whp with a SBE 302, a little bitty cam, and TEA 205s.

Then the 347cid sounds right for me. I don't want to spin it above 6k rpm, valve train gets too expensive to go beyond that and keep it reliable.

I need to hit the dyno and see what my 347 makes. Based on feel, I would say the torque is under 400 at the wheels, but I’m betting my HP is over that mark. It’s a Fordstrokers 347 in a stock block, TFS 170s, GT40 tubular upper with a ported lower, and custom cam. Comes on at about 2700-2900 RPMs and screams from there.

Edit: This thread just motivated me to hit the dyno. I called a local shop that was recommended by my tuner and am waiting to hear back on an available spot time.

My 347 makes just shy of 400 to the tire, and it's not the best. Compression is too low, and heads are old as snot. 400 to the tire is easy with the stuff available today. Not sure on the box intake if you want a flat power curve. I will say this, I have to wind out quite a bit before the power really comes in. So 400 hp, yes, flat broad power curve, that's a little tougher.

This is a great topic. I to am leaning toward remaining N/A versus supercharging. It sounds like the 347 kit is the better option over 306 and higher? Who else is a good resource for these kits besides Coast High Performance?

Idk I’d say the box r is pretty good as far as torque curve goes ;)
