'93 LX 2.3L trans issue/fix up info needed

Hello fellow pony lovers,

I am hoping forum expert folks can help me with info and guidance please. I have owned my '93 LX 2.3L Auto Hatchback since new off the dealer lot (now 95600 miles) and she has always been my baby. In 2019 I was involved in a minor accident with a person who pulled out in front of me. The only damage I could see was a busted right headlight, corner light and cracked bumper so I drove her home to her stall. Then realizing it was her first accident EVER, my anger boiled then I shed a few tears. I replaced the lights with found NOS and was taking her out for a drive when I made it 1/2 block and all of sudden I lost complete power. Engine RPMs responded with gas peddle but no power to the wheels. I tried all forward gears and had the same result. Reverse slightly functioned with very high RPM so I was able to get her back into the stall. I checked the fluid level and all was good so I assumed the worst as a complete rebuild would be needed. Again my anger boiled and I shed more tears. Unfortunately I had no extra funds and she has been sitting gathering dust since 2019.

Recently I changed jobs and have saved up a bit so I need to get her on the road. I can do simple plug and play repairs but thinking of any trans work really might be beyond my skillset unless this could be a simple diagnosis. My trans code is "LDGGG". Of course from sitting for so long, now the battery is dead as well. My father always worked on her and unfortunately he is not around anymore so I am very reluctant to trust any ole shop with my girl. There are no modifications and she is 95% OEM with only a hand full of aftermarket replacement parts so I want to keep her original.

Really appreciate suggestions for getting my little pony in shape so I can cruise again. THANK YOU!

Jo

DUDE sorry to here that and i don't have any experience with transmissions other than basic service on my own (replacing the clutch etc) and i also drive a Manuel at that so its completely different. i may have something to add though my friend was doing donuts in his automatic s10 and smoked his trans trying to show off by doing one in reverse to were he has to rev it up a lot to get it to start moving... maybe you could have an issue with how the trans delivers engine power to transmission? like flex plate or torque converter. that's my best guess. Best of luck to you man!!!

I can overhaul your transmission but I am not there
Buy one from Ford and have it installed or bite the bullet and have them do it
It is actually more money to rebuild it than it is to put a rebuilt one in it
If you want to save your old trans buy one off ebay used

@jojobacon 95600 miles the transmission should still pull. You need to go through the diagnostics to determine what the problem could be. IIRC there are two solenoids on the valve body accessible inside the pan and a governor that is accessible by removing the tail shaft housing. From my limited experience you are better off fixing your stock transmission than purchasing a used one that MAY NOT be for your application. I know this because I almost installed an A4LD transmission out of a 2.3 Mustang into my 1992 4.0 Explorer and right before I committed to install it, I found out that it is a bit different. The ATSG A4LD manual available online has enough material in it to keep you reading all weekend. The link below is to a Ukranian transmission supply house website that has the PDF document available as of last night. It is easy to download or read online but you may want to do as I have done and download and save it to your computer in case all or part of the Ukranian internet could go down at any moment. I pray for the people of Ukraine.

There are so many updated hard parts for the A4LD
If you want a rebuilt one, buy one from Ford
If you have Aamco, TSO or Autozone provide the rebuilt unit, you will get none of the updated parts IMO
All other A4LD's are tougher than the 2.3 application
Meaning if you put one in your 2.3 from a say 4x2 5.0 explorer, it will be slower because of pushing thru more clutch packs et al.
