Two shows recently had 2005 Mustang GTs on them with some performance numbers. They are as follows:

Pontiac Test Drive on Speed

Quarter mile times:

  • Pontiac GTO - 13.92
  • Ford Mustang GT - 14.31

0 to 60 mph times:

  • Pontiac GTO - 6.00
  • Ford Mustang GT - 6.18

600' slalom speed:

  • Pontiac GTO - 60.83
  • Ford Mustang GT - 60.66

Horsepower TV on Spike TV

They took a stock mustang and did dyno pulls for unmodded and modded states (including nitrous). The info is summarized as follows:

  • Stock - 255 rwhp
  • K&N FIPK - 265 rwhp
  • K&N FIPK + Flowmaster axle back - 271 rwhp
  • K&N FIPK + Flowmaster exhaust + ZEX 75hp Nitrous - 336 rwhp

Opinions on these numbers?

  • Stock - 255 rwhp (15% DTL)?
  • K&N FIPK - 265 rwhp (10 Net Gain with FIPK)
  • K&N FIPK + Flowmaster axle back - 271 rwhp (+10 FIPK + 6 ABE = 16 Net)
  • K&N FIPK + Flowmaster exhaust + ZEX 75hp Nitrous - 336 rwhp (+10 FIPK + 6 ABE +75 Zex=91 Net) Where did the 3% Nitrous net go?

The tracked results would have to factor in driver response and skill. There is nothing easy about a 600 foot slalom in a RWD. The GTO has the advantage with the 100 extra base HP. I can't see why the GT got 14.31 in the 1/4. The few guys I have seen at the track have been running LOW 14s, nearly breaking to the 13 point at around 100-103MPH. 0-60 is adequate and about right.

As for the Dyno - where are they losing 15% Base HP? Was this an AOD? That seems a little high. I would think the highside percent for DTL for a manual would be 13%- average about 10%. Look at the notations next to the dyno results. Was there any indication that they tuned the GT after each modification? I would think especially with the ZEX, timing would need to be played with to achieve optimum compression ignition more toward BDC on the compression stroke. Yet somewhere there they lost nearly 3% from the listed HP, unless that was a Gross HP figure.

Still decent when comparing it to the GTO. The aftermarket cost of the last set of modifications is still less than the $7,000 difference in base prices of the GTO and GT. And, the GTO (no offense DOC) is still not a Stang.

Now, let's take the last dyno run modified GT out and run the same track tests against the GTO and see where it sits. :nice:

Those 1/4 mile times are horrible. The 05' GT is capable of mid 13's.

its a 81 horepower gain....they said nothing about tuning the car. they also said that it cost $1300 for all the mods. $630 zex, $300 k&n, $300 flowmasters. (just guessing on exact prices, but close...and that gets you in the ballpark)

and i agree the drive in those times sucked. only automobile magazine has posted such a slow et (14.2)....i know mag racing, but thats where the lowest numbers have come from.

Bigcat. Where did I go wrong in the math? Unless there was a different set-up from the Flowmaster axle back to full exhaust replacement to exhaust headers/cat. Is a 15% DTL sandard for a manual?

Stock - 255 rwhp (15% DTL)?
K&N FIPK - 265 rwhp (10 Net Gain with FIPK)
K&N FIPK + Flowmaster axle back - 271 rwhp (+10 FIPK + 6 ABE = 16 Net)
K&N FIPK + Flowmaster exhaust + ZEX 75hp Nitrous - 336 rwhp (+10 FIPK + 6 ABE +75 Zex=91 Net or 346 rwhp) Where did the 3% Nitrous net go?

As for the 1/4s, I have no idea where the driving was done, under what conditions, but it has been hotter than an over worked hooker and Stocks have been pulling HIGH 13s/LOW 14s in my area.

Thanks fellas...Just answer back on the math. This always confuses me. :D

336-255=81 i dont think zex 75 shot is 75 at the wheels, but at the crank

i just watched the hp tv again, they claimed $435 flows, $230 k&n, and $630 zex. we all know the flows and k&n are cheaper than that. so should be around $1150 or so for those mods. but why the hell didnt they tune it? must be a future episode.

i dont know what the dtl is, someone else might know....

DTL can vary from 15-18% and it also depends on the dyno.I have noticed a difference as much as 10HP from dyno to dyno.I havent seen any 05's run faster then mid-low 14's in stock form around here, good driver or not.I was at some races last night, and there was a couple running in the 14.4-14.60 range with minor bolt ons.On the other hand i havent seen a GTO run that quick either, there was even a magazine that did a Maguson blower and the car picked up like .2-.4 tenths. They couldnt explain it and never did.

On Pontiac Test Drive, speeds supposidly adjusted for altitude

According to the show, the times for the 0-60 and 1/4 mile were adjusted for altitude...

There will be some more 05 Mustang action on Speedvision in the near future. Watch Truck Universe on Sept. 11th, pretty cool Mustang GT racing a truck episode.

There will also be an upcoming Two Guys Garage episode with an 05 GT blower install. I'm not sure of the exact date, but probably late Sept.

During FFW @ Norwalk most 5speed cars turned 13.80s-101mph. It is like everything else it despends on so many conditions but the Dyno numbers from the show seem right on with what I have seen so far. To be honest the GTO is a beast for the money with all the rebates and would only cost you $1200 more than a Mustang till Midnight which has passed. The truth is if you drive a Mustang and a GTO and stay away from the brand loyalty you would buy the GTO. It is really a complete package. I still think the Mustang is to short on power since the insurance rate is the same for a Corvette-GTO-Mustang when I called my agent. I just don't like the $500 a month payment for a car I can only drive 8 months a year.

BTW, the only other thing they mentioned was that the owner of the 05 Mustang they were working on had already installed 4.33 gears in rear...
