My dad and I went to the 1/4 mile today. He was running his 06 GT and me the 97GT.

His times seem a bit off to me though. It's an 06 GT automatic, with GT500 wheels and tires, and he added the 'power pack' from ford. Our elevation is around 800-900ft, and the weather was good, about 68F and humid. Traction control was left on. His best was a 14.18 at 98mph, with a 2.1X 60' time.

This is at least an improvement from this summer, when he ran mid 14.6's at 95mph, but the weather was terrible (90 and humid). At that time, he had the GT500 wheels, but no power pack and got 2.2x 60' times.

Are these typical times for an 06 GT? I made a pass and the 60' felt good and the pull at half track still felt great. I thought these cars should run high 13s at 100 stock though?

My 97GT, anual with an offroad H pipe ran a 14.46 at 95mph.

Yeah, your dad's gt is a little off. The auto's for the S197's run pretty decent times stock. Your dad should be running at least high or mid 13's if he knows how to get off the line well enough. He should of ran with the TCS off and see what times he gets. Nothing better like father and son racing their stangs at the tracks

He needs to turn overdrive and t/c off and get a good tune. It's a little low, but not out of the ordinary.

During the summer runs, he made most of the passes with the traction control off and it didn't make any difference. With the GT500 wheels and 285s on them, there was no traction trouble.

The 60' times seemed pretty good. He was getting 2.1s today on the street tires and the traction control on. Maybe with the TCS off, it would get a 2.0X, but that would still only be good for a 14.0. Even the MPH is off... it is shifting automatically. We do notice it pulls a significant amount of power duirng the shifts. anyone else notice this?

Keep in mind, every 1/10 off the 60' is good for 2/10 off of the ET. Good chance if he knocked that 60' down and turned off TCS and OD he'd see some better times.

Is the car tuned?

Sounds like dad is launching from idle, instead of against the brake. Also, a stock GT automatic should run high 13's at around 99 mph. Bigger wheels and tires add rotational mass, so that could be part of the issue, as well.

Buy a handheld tuner (Diablosport, SCT, etc.) to fix the throttle lag, raise/firm shift points, and set for premium fuel, and dad's car will run high 13's easily at over 100 mph.

Everyone is talking about the launch... what kind of 60' time are people getting with their GT? The problem isn't in the launch in my opinion. With a 2.1 60' time, there is only maybe another .1 left on street tires (2.0 being very good for a street tire). Running a 14.18 now, that would reduce to a 14.0 or 13.9 at best. Still not where it should be.

It currently has the tune from the ford racing 'power pack'. It didn't change the shifts, but it is now tuned for premium. The power pack definately made a difference in the car. The cooler weather combined with that power pack knocked off .5s from the times and added 2-3mph.

I had thought about the rotational mass of the wheels too. They are pretty heavy for sure. On the last pass tonight, we replaced the heavy rear GT500 wheels and tires with a set of bald goodyears (stock tires from a 99-04 GT). They are much lighter and obviously shorter. Has to be at least 10-15lbs weight savings between both wheels. The 60' was still 2.1ish, but the mph didn't improve at all. In fact, it was lower than the previous best run. Now that just makes no sense at all!!!

The car doesn't roll over and die anywhere, but it just lacks power. The 60', 1/8 and 1/4 numbers all match up nicely. It doesn't seem to die at the top end, or take a while to get moving from the 60'.

Does the car have a knock sensor? Maybe it is seeing false knock and pulling out timing?

Here is the video of mine from the spring with the listed mods in my sig minus the tires. I ran the OEM 235/50-18s in the video also had the stock mufflers on as well.

No video from late summer runs, but here is the chart I made of all my runs. You can notice the gains I made at the top end of the track after the weight reduction(190ish lbs), but how it hurt me off the line.

Yeah, there's not much more left in the 60' with street tires, but there's plenty left with the tune. Ford's tunes are conservative at best. They still leave plenty of throttle lag and sloppy shifts. Get a good tune from Brenspeed or Bamachips and he'll see 13's no problem.

His times do seem very slow for the mods. However, what constitutes a Ford Power Pack, 90mm CAI and 3.73 gears? Also, what size are his wheels? Ideally, with 17 inch wheels, a 90mm CAI and 3.73 gears, he should be able to turn 13.4-13.5 1/4 mile times in a 2006 GT automatic. But 68F and humid isn't ideal weather.

The wheels are ford factory GT500 wheels. 18x9.5 rear and 18x8.5 front I believe. They are quite heafty for sure

The power pack is a tune for 91, mufflers and the 90mm MAF with filter. They advertise it at 20hp.

Maybe it isn't a fair comparison, but my 97 GT ran 14.46 at 95mph the same night. It has an offroad H pipe, but is otherwise stock to the paper filter. I should have 85hp less than the 06 GT, but I was only running .2-.3s slower and 2-3mph less.

You 97 GT is also about 500lbs lighter I believe. And as I stated before, he needs a real tune. The Ford ones are garbage.

The weight difference isn't that much!

curb weights are 3250 for the 97 vs 3480 for the 06. That's 230lbs only.

As for the tune... my point is that is should be quicker stock for stock.

You 97 GT is also about 500lbs lighter I believe. And as I stated before, he needs a real tune. The Ford ones are garbage.

Hrm... I thought the 06 was weighing in more than that.. oh well. It's still a difference. Stock for stock, you would think they're quicker, but the S197 platform is drive-by-wire. That makes a HUGE difference. Without a proper tune, throttle lag and shift firmness is terrible.

Before the tune, my '06 auto was very sluggish off the line and shifted really smooth. So I can see how the stock auto would be slow comparatively. I never baselined my car before the tune, but the SOTP feel was night and day(that was before CAI/gears/H Pipe even)! In my spreadsheet below, the first 4 runs were at full weight, so I know a custom tune alone will put these cars in the mid 13s(weather/track prep permitting). Spend the money on tunes either from Brenspeed or Bamachhips and you won't be dissapointed.
