1/4 window covers

Just picked up an '89 GT with some pretty nasty 1/4 window moldings. I would just replace them with some junkyard pieces, but I'm guessing anything I find there will probably be just about as bad. I've heard you can pull them out, and sand them down and paint them, but these might be beyond that (FL car).
I've heard there are actual "covers" you can buy to put over the 1/4's. Anyone have any experience with these?

Are they poor looking or just fit badly? I don't want them if that's the case. Guess I'll keep my eyes open for some more easily repairable mouldings. Thanks.
