My AODE blew again [for the 4th time] and I'm sick of it. I'm also tired of dealing with EFI and such. I have no problem with carb setups so I'm switching to something that I'm more familiar with. I don't want this thread to turn into a EFI vs Carb thread, I've heard it. If you want to do that, start a new thread.

I have a 351W out of an 84 ford truck [needs intake/carb]. So I will need a intake manifold, and carb.. I'm assuming I'll need a a throttle cable as well or throttle bracket, a lower fuel pump, and new fuel lines.

As far as the T5 goes, I can find a used T5 out of a fox body on craigslist for about $400 and I can follow the instructions at http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-for...-mustang-aode-to-t5-conversion-w-pics.781141/ to get it to work. I won't need a new computer since it'd be carbed.

I'm assuming I'd need a MSD box to control ignition as well.

So I'm thinking:

Trans: $400 [could probably get the bellhousing/clutch with this, I already have the pedals]
Clutch cable: $50
Carb: $250
Intake: $250
Fuel pump/lines: $100
Odds and ends: $200
MSD/Summit ignition box: $200

Am I missing anything? Thoughts/suggestions?

a couple thoughts ...

- any worries about emissions?
- you can get some pretty decent money for your EFI stuff, especially if it is aftermarket stuff
- an engine bay is very clean with all that EFI stuff out of there
- i have an autolite 4100 carb sitting on my shelf, i am 1/2 through a rebuild on it.
- that motor can probably take a fuel pump eccentric (driven off the cam), which can save the cost and installation headached of the external fuel pump.
- i also hear those external pumps can be noisy
- you will also need a different dizzy and coil. i MIGHT have one of those too on the shelf, i can check if you are interested in it
- with the dizzy, you should ditch the points and get a pertronix 3. that includes a multiple spark feature, so no more need for a MSD
- an AOD (minus the (-E) is a pretty good alternative. i have one and that would be a very straightforward swap for you.
- the AODs are also very inexpensive and don't cost alot to rebuild. mine was $700, built for 500 horses

No.

Yup, I'll be selling most of my 302 stuff. Edelbrock performer upper/lower, performance products 351w performance lower, etc.. once I get the engine out of hte car and the job is done.
- an engine bay is very clean with all that EFI stuff out of there
Another reason I'm doing it and probably relocating the battery to the trunk.
- i have an autolite 4100 carb sitting on my shelf, i am 1/2 through a rebuild on it.
Sorry, I got nothin'.
- that motor can probably take a fuel pump eccentric (driven off the cam), which can save the cost and installation headached of the external fuel pump.
So I can just replace the fuel pump in the tank with a lower one and [hopefully] use the same fuel lines?
- i also hear those external pumps can be noisy
Noise doesn't bother me. It's a toy, not a DD.

Def. Interested, let me know.
- with the dizzy, you should ditch the points and get a pertronix 3. that includes a multiple spark feature, so no more need for a MSD
Honestly, I'll just be going with whatever is cheaper.
- an AOD (minus the (-E) is a pretty good alternative. i have one and that would be a very straightforward swap for you.
I kinda wanna go with a t5 for less weight and the fun of it.
- the AODs are also very inexpensive and don't cost alot to rebuild. mine was $700, built for 500 horses
My AODE was rebuilt multiple times, was told it could handle tons of HP, etc..etc.. and it blew up multiple times. It was rebuilt multiple times by the same shop and they refuse to do anything about it. I'd rather throw in a T5 and do my own work from now on.

Idle issues, problems with the emission tube constantly breaking, o2 sensors not staying connected, it seems like the car stalls out when idling, etc...

I have an AOD behind my 383 because i already had one built. But i hear the AODE has more potential. I have a Manual valve body with red clutches. Like 8 in first. For the past 7 years no issues.

If you neutral drop your auto or try power shifting threw gears when its not a manual valve body you will burn it up.

One more note....Performance AOD Trannys get really HOT. You need a separate cooler. The "stacked plate" kind. I use the TruCool #4739.
Heat is the #1 killer of Autos.

I do have a transcooler on mine. It is mounted right up front near my radiator.

What kind? the tube and fin ones don't do crap. There's alot of online articles about it. You need a stack plate one.

I don't know what the brand was, it was installed when I had the trans redone. Either way, I'm not putting another automatic transmission in. It would also cause problems with my carb setup.

Manual valve body autos dont use computers or kick down rods. You shift my hand without a clutch pedal.

Either way though i think you can make it happen for $1500 if you're doing all the work yourself.

383, last i checked, the manual valve bodies for AODs were really expensive, like in the $500 range.

where did you get yours, and what did it run you?

The AODE's must be hit or miss, I have run one behind my engine for 20k without a hiccup.
I will agree that Carb looks better and is cleaner. You shouldnt have an issue for 1500, you can probably find an older 4 eye fox rotting away somewhere and get most everything you need including the little easily forgotten stuff for next to nothing.

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

Probably going to be a little shy with $1500. I just did one of those Summit all in one hei distributers on a truck. It cost $140, everything is new, and it turns your car into a one wire igniton system. I can't complain. I know certain msd boxes can run the whole ignition system, bit not for that price.

If you stay with the stock accessories, there won't be enough room to mount a mechanical fuel pump. They also don't sell a timing cover compatible with a mechanical fuel pump and a sn water pump. The cleanest way is to get a carb style pick up tube for the tank. You could probably remove the fuel pump from your stock pickup and fashion a new pickup with a piece of steel fuel line amd a compression union. Then mount an electric fuel pump outside the tank.

yea for a fuel pump just get a holley blue pump and regulator, for the tank just take the pump off and run a piece of hose to the bottom of the tank, keep all the stock lines and just tap into the line by the filter for the pump and use the efi filter. i think with selling your stuff and 1500 cash you should have no problem doing the conversion, you can find a carb on craigslist for under 100, and rebuilt it yourself for under 30$. and search the junk yard for a pedal assembly, actually pm nota4.6 he has one out of his 99 that will work for your setup, a good used t-5 can be found in the 500$ range,a good carb intake is about 100 bucks, as for ignition do a ford hei conversion you can get them for like 150 bucks its not a 1 wire setup like mentioned above but its 3 wires and very easy to hook up,

Thanks for the info on the fuel system!

I already have the pedal setup and will probably be grabbing a trans this weekend.
