180* T-stat

2001 GT. If I put a 180* T-stat instead of the 195*......does it actually do anything? I know the 5.0L Mustangs it makes a difference. On my 96 Cobra, I was told different T-stats make no difference because they are opened by the computer.

I just want to try and get the cooling system to run as cool as possible.

I installed one in my 98 gt and it helped out with cooling better. I went from 215F down to 195-200F.

Do you have an aftermarket gauge that told you that? That seems pretty good.

The stat is the same technology today as it was in the 50's (or older)...
The 180 is very good, don't go down to 160 though...there is such a thing as too cold.
The stat opening earlier isn't enough though - You'll need to have the fans kicking on earlier though to really benefit - otherwise, it'll still run warm/hot. Use a chip or a handheld programmer to turn the fans on at about 173 for low speed and 178 for high speed. (at least, that's the numbers I recall setting mine at...close enough)

For my 98, it dropped the temp a whole letter in the word "normal" in the temp gauge when the car is at operating temp. Sorry, can't give you an actual temp reading though and I don't have a chip/tune to bring the fans on sooner either.

Yeah, I am gonna get a chip burned when the mod swap car is finished. I figure I better because the parts car had L/T's U/D pullies, Prochamber, MAC cat-back, 3.73's CAI etc...

I made everything back to stock besides the catback, and I am using a BBK O/R H-pipe for shorties instead of the Prochamber for L/T's. I will get a chip burned for 180* then. Sounds good....thanks everyone!

I absolutely hate the fact that the factory gauges dont have numbers...

I have been wanting to know if its worth it to go with the 180* tstat... I think I am going to pick up one as well!

Why do you want to keep your engine at 180* instead of the factory setting of around 195*?

I used my diablo predator and I used to have an autometer temp gauge.
