1968 Rims sizes

I have a 1968 coupe and I want to put some torque thrust D rims on it. I need to know if anyone Knows what is the max siz rim I can use without getting any rubbing or modifying the body. I wanted to go with 16 inch rims, unless someone has a suggestion. THanks

16X8 with a 4 1/2" backspacing works.
Not sure about 17" sizes

Im sorry I am not familiar with the backspace terminology. What does that mean exactly.

The tires I want only have a 4 inch backspace for the 16x8s. They are the torque thrust D. Does anyone know if I can use those or I need to have the 4.5 inch BS? Do they make a 4.5 in the D's?
