Sold it to a buddy because in a Mustang builders book i have says they give good power inscrese. He says it has a good difference in power, but it idles horrible, and its jerky and smells rich and gets hot.

Any thing?

I don't think there is any material difference between the '93 upper and the '86 upper? A '93 from a cobra is a different story and would require the lower also. Idle / jerky etc probably be vacuum related

I just removed it from my car. I have a 93 that just recived a trickflow. He has a stock 86 GT. I remember somewhere that they flow beter. So i let him install it. He installed and came to my dealership and it runs like junk. I cant be sure anything didnt fall down or something like that. But my car ran like a top before i removed it. TPS didnt move or anything. He put his EGR on thats all. Maybe he cleaned out the egr. But i dont know. I was hoping someone may have had this problem.

Sigh, You do NOT adjust the TPS!!!!!!!!
PLEASE STOP SPREADING THAT RICER BS MYTH!

The '86 *uppers* were unique. They were tuned more for the low-end and mid-range. In other words, they were tuned more for REAL WORLD DRIVING! But, real world driving power doesn't sell cars like better qtr mile times. So, the 87-93 uppers were tuned more for mid-range and high-end. Also, the E6 heads, which again are better for real world driving, were replaced by the truck E7 heads. Again, to get better qtr mile times.

That's why a stock '86 5.0 is FASTER in the 1/8th mile, from a dead stop, and in the street were you can't "light up the tires".

So, the "massive" gains that the 87+ upper will give are mainly BS. You'll see around 5+ HP above 3K rpms. As I've said MANY times, if someone is going over 3K rpms on the road, they don't have a clue on how to drive!

Uhm, I did switch to the 87+ upper and then to the Explorer intake. Yea, I gave up low-end and mid-range power. BFD, the 5.0 has plenty as it is. :) But, my point is that the "massive gains" that people often claim are as PURE BS as "adjusting the TPS".

Wow.....you have alot of time on youre hands and to me that was a complete waste of reading. Being a ford tech what i read on Mustang forums...i kinda take with a grain of salt. We know you cant adjust a ford tps. Thats a given. Aftermarket TB's do have a provision on them in which the TPS is bolted to that has slots built in to adjust them.

the 86 uppers have a smaller TB diameter - about 55mm or so and do not have the cast in deperessions for the EGR coolant chamber like the 87+ intakes - other than that the runners appear to be the same size but I have not measured them with a cc burrette. My eye is pretty good. The 86 upper could be ported to accept a 65mm TB, gasket matched and should then perform the same as a 87-93 upper.
