I just picked up a 1989 Saleen with the old-school basket weave style wheels which I quickly replaced with black powder-coated Cobra R's. Anyone have any idea how much these things are worth? I know some people may like them but I personally don't...lol

They are probably worth the most to you, even though you don't realize it. If it is a ture Saleen, you'll want to keep them. In the event that you decide to sell the car, it will be worth much more to a collector if you have them. One of the biggest mistakes Saleen owners make is selling parts off of their cars when they decide to go aftermarket. Don't get me wrong, if you don't like the wheels, change them (it is your car). However I'd keep them if I where you. I keep everything off of mine just in case I decide to sell it later. You might want to consider doing the same.

One more thing. Before you start changing things, you might want to get a good understanding of what you actually have. In the early years, Saleen made a lot of "custom" cars at customers request. You should call Liz at Team Saleen, give her your VIN, and see if there is anything that makes your car more rare. You didn't buy a regular Mustang, you bought a limited production car. Just thought you might want to see if there is anything "special" about it before you start changing it and selling off parts...

Pleeeease keep your wheels in a safe place. Like sal07b said, they may be of great value to a future owner of your car. It would be a shame to see those wheels end up lost to the mass populace, mounted to who-knows-what sort of car.

Also buy a copy of Brad Bowling’s Saleen Book, as it outlines all the standard features and options of your year Saleen. A great reference guide.

Congratulations on you new car. Do you have any pics. you can share? Whereabouts do you live?

as a guy who can't get his hands on a set on a set of original chrome wheels, i couldn't agree more.

KEEP THEM! the few bucks you might get today will mean nothing down the road, but the wheels will be priceless.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I was leaning toward just keeping them boxed up and I think I'll do just that. I also kept the original Flo-Fits (which are in HORRIBLE condition) and replaced them with newer Flo-Fits for now. I emailed Liz from Saleen last week and she confirmed that it is a genuine Saleen, with no special options. Although a collector did tell me that the basket-weave wheels were a $600 option in 1989 and the last year that those wheels were available. I'll try to post some pics this weekend.

Good responses from the guys. Congrats on your purchase. If you must know if those basket weaves if in really good condition can fetch $600-800 a set. The white basket weave are more difficult to find than the grey and fetch a little more. The white five spoke are also more rare than the grey five spoke and sell for the same amount of money.
No matter though, just hold on to them like Sal and Head said.
Seat Source who owns Flo Fit in Riverside California now may have some of the red/gray and tan material still in stock. They did a little over a year ago. The special production flofit halo net headrests are worth more than your seats no matter what condition they are in unless they are like new. I have seen guys pay over $700 for a nice clean set of those headrests. Flo Fit will not make them for any amount of money. I tried more than once.
For the same reason if a guy has the Recaro seats from 93-97 with the net or slat head rests hold on to those like they are gold. Recaro has refused for years to re-make those headrests also even though they still produce the exact seat. Sorry for the tangent.

Off the subject, but I'd like to go back and punch the guy I bought my Saleen from right in the mouth. For openers, the guy pronounced it a "Say-lean"! If you own the car, shouldn't you maybe learn how to pronounce the freakin thing correctly?

Then, the car had NO brakes and no clutch at all, and it was his daily driver! I had to drive the thing straight to the shop to put in a new clutch, brakes and front end. Then I dump the oil and it looks like Hershey's syrup. I'd be surprised if the guy EVER changed the oil.

Like I said earlier, the Flo Fits were trashed, and four of the plug wires had electrical tape wrapped around various portions of them, where they had obviously been burned or cut at some point.

The worst part is that the guy who owned this car was LOADED! What is wrong with people?

Sorry, I'm just a little worked up about how someone could treat a collector car that way. Time for me to go to bed.....lol.

wow really i have a good set of basket weeve wheels that did not come on my car but just came with it along with various other spare parts. i had no idea they were worth that much. i just may try to tell them, seeing as i have no use for them.

Are they 5 lug I hope? If so, what kind of condition are they in and can you post some pics? I have guys all over Los Angeles who will eat them up. Have you ever felt how light that American Racing wheel is with no tire on it? Awesome wheel for us older fox body owners. Let me know.

How much are these wheels going for.??? I have two sets. I have the five stars that I am about to put on my car for show. I also have a set of Sterns that cost me a arm and leg... Those are favorite set... I bought my wheels in california from a friend,,, Let me know what the wheels are worth... Yes I have four sets of wheels for one car...

Yes my sterns are nice and I will post pictures once I get my site back up. I got them shorlty after prucahsing the car for $1800.00. I wanted them so I paid the price. My rims are in excellent shape and I use them on the car very little because of the weather on the central coast. I just a set of the 89 ARE wheels, 5 star for regular use while I have my white mesh wheels cleaned and polished... maybe paint the center section ..... I bought a 65 fatsback and a 96 cobra to keep me from doing mods to my saleen. It is hard to have car like this and not go crazy but after 4 years of ownership I am settling down.. Hopefully I get statione in AZ where I want to retire from the Air Force then I will completely overhaul my saleen. I have bought a new stripe etc over the years. Cannot wait to start this process...
