1990 Mustang Lx On3 Turbo Dyno Tune

Nice to have more narrow minded members here.
It's not that I'm narrow minded, it's that I don't like swapping things where they should not go. I like Chevy, and I give respect where it's due (that's obvious, I DID say the TH400 "is a damn good transmission") but I don't think a GM transmission belongs in a Ford. And if I were to own a GM vehicle, I certainly wouldn't want to swap Ford parts into it. It's just wrong in my eyes. You can go ahead and do all that you want with your vehicles, but don't call me narrow minded for wanting to keep MY vehicles all Ford.

Is it still a GM trans after you swap all the guts with aftermarket parts?
Now THAT'S where things get tricky. In my eyes it wouldn't be since just the case is the only original GM piece, but I'm not running a 3000 HP monster that needs a built 400! For what little HP I run and the fact that I'm not a drag racer, factory Ford hard parts suit me just well :)

Also, OP said this car was a "weekend warrior", it's not gonna be a full blown track only car. For guys like me and OP, it would be a waste of time and effort to go through the trouble of finding a TH400 (well finding one for me isn't hard since I have one in my shop), cutting the bellhousing off to put the new one on, and getting an adapter plate for the torque converter when a good C4 can handle it just fine and bolt right up and sit perfectly in the car (I think this is what srtthis was getting at when he said C4 even though he prefers the TH400) and no this portion of the message was not directed at you Hoopty, it's directed at anyone that wants to argue that a TH400 would be the best option for OP.
 
No offense taken. I was just being the devil's advocate. I'm more or less on board with you, although after seeing a dude stuff a stock LS motor and turbo into a Fairmont and run 10s, it's hard to stay true to one brand in a car. Fast is fast, and that car does it in a hurry.

I will also admit that I have a set of electric fans from a Camaro in my car that works like gangbusters. Plus it was cheap. So what can you do? Use what you gotta do to get the job done.
 
For the life of me, I cannot understand why you would build a turbo motor without forking out the extra money for a turbo cam. You might spend, what, another $300 for it? After spending all that money for a system, $300 is a wise investment. I quoted you because I like your statement about efficiency. Sure you can do all that with a stock cam, as MY 85 GT has proven, but I can only liken that to having the body of an Olympic sprinter and the brains of a chimpanzee.


BECAUSE he is on a stock block....no need to spend extra money when he is going to make the same HP to split that block into a million pieces with a turbo .....If it was a dart block or a 351 etc,,...yes i agree then a cam is a good choice...im at and over what my block can take with a stock cam....with a turbo just up the boost and the HP is there....
 
I would get a custom cam!My buddies H/C/I ed curtis cammed s/c car runs with my 351w turbo all day! NO ONE else stands a chance with me. As for the trans? I would go with a gforce t-5 or tremac or c4! My C4 will hold 750 easy. DONT EVER cross bread ANY GM crap into a mustang! GM is the :leghump:ing pond scum biggest POS on earth!

So tell me its worth spending say 3-4 hundreds on a cam...timing chain,gasket,doing the Job...ON A STOCK 302 BLOCK??? when you can get 500 to the rear wheels on a stock cam and split the F*** out of the stock block......why?.....like i said if it was a 351 or a better block sh** yeah get a custom cam but not on a stock 302 ...This is just my opinion....I have an awesome set of heads good intake,14 psi meth injection and a good tune...i make plenty to split mine....

I understand what you're saying, I don't know why no one else is getting it.
The point is, that $300 or more, you spend on a custom cam is a huge waste of money because the stock cam is good enough to support enough power to split the stock block.

Now I am obviously against cross breeding vehicles, but you can't say GM is crap. They've made a lot of good vehicles and parts.
 
Here's a question for you guys...

What causes the stock 302 to split? is it to much cylinder pressure?

i have a theory of what causes the blower cars to split at around 500hp. but what causes the turbo and nitrous cars?
 
SO if i go with the c4 how do you adjust the shift points? or do you just manual shift? thanks for all the input so far! i also wondered how the intercooler worked being half covered i just figured the fan drew air past it even if it was away from radiator

I don't agree with adding boost to overcome a lack of efficiency. There's no difference between turning up boost and Paul Walker saying "i almost had you" after spraying the piss out of his car with 10 stages of nitrous. We all saw the outcome there.

And yeah, I just used Fast and Furious as a reference.

And stock block means little. There are plenty of people running more power with no problem and less power that have grenaded. This has been beat into the ground since the creation of forums.

I'd like to know the answer as well. Everyone is quick to point out that going past 500 hp is dangerous and a death wish, but I doubt anyone actually knows why. I don't.

My theory with a blower car is that the stress on the crank causes the mains to shift around which results in the lifter valley split... But a turbo car won't see this stress so they should be able to go well past 500 if the theory is correct. But is it? Even then I'd thing a well spec'd turbo cam would be able to make more power with less cylinder pressure and help keep the block in a single piece. Nitrous cars on the other hand will see crank stress but nothing like a blower dragging on it AND some one banging gears with it... Maybe Rick can tell me if I'm crazy or not. Well at least in this discussion

Yes there is..guys go to the turbo forums...you will find alot of good info over there...ITS NOT WORTH IT...just doesnt...make sense the block dont handle that much more the 450 to 500 rwhp...so why spend extra money on a stock block when you dont need to....you will make plenty of HP with a turbo and have nice driveabilty...But hey i know nothing...lol....im only Making over 500 rwhp with a stock cam...and my car runs really good...idles nice....sounds good...etc,,,
 
Very familiar with TTF and Denmah is my unofficial hero. But even he is running a ZR-1 cam.

I like your car, glad it makes what it does, and given the chance to have another fox for a DD, I would more than likely have an On3 setup on a stock motor. All I am saying is that you can make AS MUCH or MORE power with less boost and less stress with a more efficent setup.

That seems to be very plausible. As for turbo cars and nitrous cars (and I'll admit this is a guess, I have no experience with either) that it may have to do with a combination of stress from cylinder pressure and harmonics working together. Seems that engine deaths happen at a higher RPM. As soon as I kill this 427 with nitrous, I might be able to give better insight.

Side note - Ill probably be PMing you with nitrous questions in the next couple of weeks. This motor fell into my lap and I have never paid nitrous any attention. I'd rather not learn by mistakes and Bob's car seems to run well with it.
