It has nothing to do with that, its b/c now they can trade him for a first round pick.

Damn, wish you know anything about football.

Who is going to trade a first round pick for a guy with a 1 year contract? I guess if the team he would be traded to and Cassel could agree on an extension.

Anything is possible, but no one should question Belichick and Kraft on any personel decision they make.

:nonono: The franchise tag on Cassel will cost the Pats $14.6 million in 2009 and about $17.5 million (20% rule) in 2010 if they keep him.

If Cassel signs his contract with the Pats, tell me Redline, what team will want to pay Cassel more than that and give up picks?

any team with a crappy QB who does not want to look for one in the draft since all the good college players are staying another year. Not much coming into the draft this year as far as QB's might as well give up your#1 pick for one and take a proven QB

Exactly. Any team who signs him to an offer sheet will have to pony up two 1st round picks, a la Joey Galloway, and I don't see anyone being that dumb especially for a player who is unproven and only had one respectable season.

Also, they'd now have about 25% of their salary cap tied up in two quarterbacks and that is just insane...unless you think your starter's injury is going to become a problem.

At the very least, this shows that they at least want an insurance policy in case Brady cannot come back from that injury.

I agree. No one will pay that sort of coin for Cassel and give picks. Yes, the Pats want some insurance. Probably they will bite the bullet for one year. I can't blame them.

Brady is going to play this season. All those reports are a bunch of bunk ass crap, just like the reports of the Rams super bowl walk through taping

I know you're in denial about this and think it's bunk because Brady said so, but A) you can never really trust what a player says about their recovery (can be proven FYI) and B) the Pats are making a huge investment in Cassel.

At the very least, they are concerned about his progress. That is saying something.

You know this b/c bellichick called you and told you? Ok got it.

And your word/opinion means exactly what? Correct me if Im wrong but aren't you the same guy that was raving about Jay Cutler and his best most accurate arm in the NFL......yeah.......ok.....

Even you as the Patriot fan you are have to think that if brady was 100% on track they wouldnt have spent so much on Cassel. He was a safety policy, no more no less. They couldnt afford to lose both starting QB's.

The way I see it is that signing cassel does not mean Brady is not going to play. Its an added insurance policy in case he does not play. Regardless of his recovery progress at this point he has still not put on a pair of pads and played at full speed and they cant take the chance of him not playing no matter how minor.

It's common sense. You don't spend $14 mil on a backup quarterback unless there are concerns about your starter.

I think that would support my cause after the season Jay had where he set multiple team records and was selected to the pro bowl.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you the guy telling everyone not to worry about Brady's at the beginning of the year? You've proven to have no ability to objectively comment on anything regarding your team.

I would be absolutely STUNNED if matt cassel is a patriot on april 25th.. if both him and brady are on this roster on june 1st then belichick has lost his sanity.... Even if it's reported tomorrow that brady will not be ready to start or even miss the 2009 season. I still would be stunned if cassel is not traded.

thats the short version now here is why

they are not keeping cassel.. cassel was franchised so he can be traded.. they are fishing for a first and a third.. Will they get a first and a third... Probably not but they will get something... The new team will not be paying 14 million for one year once he is traded they can work the numbers into a 5 year deal around 50 million.. this has been done before not a big deal..

Even if brady can not go in 09 cassell can not and will not be the QB.. the numbers just don't work.. O'connell or however you spell his name will be the starter..

WOW I see several people think they are keeping cassel.. Am I the only one here that understands that that would be a bone head move for the pats even if brady has both legs cut off..

keeping cassel and not trading him = death by salary cap

Ok let me say this again so I can be clear..

1. Belichick love him or hate him is very smart with the cap... only a idiot would carry brady and cassel.. even matt milen is not that cap suicidal it makes no sense... EVEN IF BRADY DOES NOT PLAY IN 09.... the money does not work since this team has to improve at LB and CB

The only way Cassel would be on the 2009 roster is if brady is traded.. or if he retires.. If thats the case brady would come off the 2009 cap. remember even if brady is on IR his cap number counts and it's not a small number

2. only a fool would let cassel walk away for nothing.. they probably have a sign and trade worked out.. If not they will start at a first and a third and work down to some sort of package in a trade.

this is a perfect scenerio to trade cassel for something plus the way the rules are written once he is traded the new team can rip up the franchise deal and sign him to a more reasonable multi year contract..

3. why the hell would cassel want to stay here.. this is his chance to make 5 years 50-60 million and to be a full time starter.. Cassel may say he loves it here and he will be a good boy and wear a cap and clipboard and be happy.. LOL serious??? LOL

Do you think he wants to live under the shadow of brady who he knows will be the starter as soon as he is ready?

LOOK you out of towners might not have seen it but cassel looked like he nutted on himself when he got the chance to play.. Deep down inside he is glad brady got hurt so he could have a chance to play and make a lot of money.. Just like brady was thrilled when bledsoe got hurt..

Only difference is brady was a much better actor..

So now that he turned in a good season you really think he wants to maybe start  yeah right.. he wants to start NOW and without the giant shadow of TB on his back. Strike while the iron is hot matt.. thats what I would do..

Unlike anything you ever post? Ok got it

LOL

his common sense is dead wrong.. If I find out I am bill gates love child and buy a NFL team he can cross himself off the list for the GM job..

even thinking keeping almost 30 million tied up in 2 QB's is common sense is a automatic disqualification for a NFL front office job

The obvious move if brady can not go is to trade cassel and either go with o'connel or pick up a cheaper veteran since you still have to carry bradys cap number

I would just go with o'connel and get a backup for him that is a older washed up veteran if brady can not go..

Plus If I was Belichick and brady was done for good or going to miss 09 and possibly be done I would walk away sit out a year and cherry pick another job with a younger core group..

That's pretty much the point, SVT. You don't keep that kind of money tied up in 2 quarterbacks unless there is reason to believe the starter may not come back 100%.

Kevin O'Connell is not ready to take over as a starting QB for a team like the Patriots which may push for another SB berth next year. He probably has a future there, but he's just not up to the level you need for that team. Cassel on the other hand, showed that he has what it takes to be a solid NFL starter. He's been with the team for 4 years, knows the system and can get the job done.

Going with O'Connell (if Brady does not come back) would basically be conceding the season to his development. If they go with Cassel, they can still compete even into the playoffs.

You just don't get it do you? They will not keep both QBs. They just can't, not with the cap. I don't know what I can say to get through to you, SVT explained it very well and you still don't get it....

You don't get it.. They stuck the tag to him to get something for him.. If they did not he walks and the pats get nothing. Many people think he is a lot better than he is and the pats might clean house on this one..

It does not matter if brady dies in a fire tonight.. cassel will get traded.

His value for trade has now far exceeded his worth to the patriots.. The time is now to cash in on this for both matt and for the patriots.

BTW we don't know if o'connel is ready.. he is a ???? right now.. If brady is not going to start then they will go with him and bring a veteran in as plan c

Also the patriots know they have no chance at winning the SB without brady at QB..

If brady was done for good belichick would have already resigned and would be looking for a rebuild project elsewhere..

Exactly.. it can't be done.. plus cassel would not want to stay anyways.

wow I gave him the benefit of the doubt but he really is that stupid.

Then again what kind of cutler nut swinging obama lover wouldn't be.

Redline.. that is over the line.. you know we can't have personal insults..
