You just don't get it do you? They will not keep both QBs. They just can't, not with the cap. I don't know what I can say to get through to you, SVT explained it very well and you still don't get it....
Exactly.. it can't be done.. plus cassel would not want to stay anyways.
The Pats have the cap room to do it.
You don't get it.. They stuck the tag to him to get something for him.. If they did not he walks and the pats get nothing. Many people think he is a lot better than he is and the pats might clean house on this one..
It does not matter if brady dies in a fire tonight.. cassel will get traded.
Sorry SVT, but you're kidding yourself if you believe they didn't slap the tag on him as an insurance policy. They have the cap room to carry him and Brady this year.
Now if Brady can come back, it's likely that they will trade him sometime before the season starts, but you can bet it won't be until they are sure of Brady's health.
If Brady does not recover, Cassel is the QB of the future. At the very least, he'll hold down the fort until they are comfortable enough with O'Connell to let him run the show. His value for trade has now far exceeded his worth to the patriots.. The time is now to cash in on this for both matt and for the patriots.
O'Connell is not ready, it's that simple. He went to small school that, IIRC, still runs an option based offense. Cassel went to USC where they run a pro offense and then spent 4 years with the Pats.BTW we don't know if o'connel is ready.. he is a ???? right now.. If brady is not going to start then they will go with him and bring a veteran in as plan c
I disagree. Cassel showed enough to make me believe he could win it with a good team around him, like the Pats have. Also the patriots know they have no chance at winning the SB without brady at QB..
If brady was done for good belichick would have already resigned and would be looking for a rebuild project elsewhere
Yeah, it's really a shame that he has to act like that, even after I've tried to bury the hatchet with him.Redline.. that is over the line.. you know we can't have personal insults..
I guess he just has no desire to act like an adult.

If Brady can't go they could always bring in a cheaper option like Leftwitch...I don't think the Steelers are keeping him...

Good point. Leftwich is a proven guy who would likely come on the cheap, but I think they'd still like to keep Cassel since he has been there so long.
Personally, here is what I think will happen. The Pats will carry Cassel and Brady this year. If Brady shows that he is completely healed they will trade Cassel this year, or resign/tag him and then move him in 2010.
With as much cap room as the Pats have, they can afford to keep both of them for this year. It would be a smart move for them as well.
Why would you want 30 million wrapped up in two QB's for one of which isn't gonna play. If Brady can play are you assuming that someone is gonna want Cassel for that kinda money. I don't think he proved himself to be worth 14 million.
I think its a panic move by the Pats or they think that highly of Cassel to bring them a first round pick by tradign away a one year, back up QB, that you gotta pay 14 million too. . .Yeah that makes no sense. Something is up here.

If Brady can play football weather this year or next her they are not going to trade him? I hope your refering to trading cassle. Your lack of football understanding and knowledge is dumb founding

Yeah it was over the line, and I'll never considering the hatchet "buried" b/c your a liberal and I cant stand people like you. Plus you dont know anything about football and you come in here thinking you do.
Why do you care so much about Brady and the Patriots anyway? Shouldn't you be more concerned w/ who Daniels is going to find for a replacement for cutler? Former patriots OC goes to the bronco's, Cassel goes on the market, former OC would of course want him after working with him, bench's the useless cutler. Makes sense to me

What I think is going on here is some of you guys want to use this as some sort of news on the condition of brady.. I am trying to explain this has nothing to do with brady and we are not going to know about his future until this summer. I have heard bits and pieces of news coming out of foxboro but the patriots don't tell anybody who does not need to know anything so it's going to be awhile
Your not thinking like GM.. your thinking like a fan.. it's much more complicated than just ok well brady is hurt and cassel is a qb then they must keep cassel.
the patriots do not want to spend that cap room on two QB's plus you guys are forgetting the team that gets cassel does not have to pay the 14 million.. the contract is torn up at the trade and a multiyear deal would be worked out..
plus you have to remember the patriots have some key players they want to resign and use some left over cap from this year to take up some money for future years..
Plus the patriots need to get help on the defensive side of the ball..
Also cassel right now is worth more in trade than he is as a QB to the patriots even if brady retired. Simply put I think they could get better results with a leftwich than cassel.. for a lot less than 14 million
If the patriots actually wanted to keep him they would have signed him to a 4-5 year deal at a reasonable cap number for 09 then traded him after this season...
Look this has nothing to do with me being a pats fan, I am just trying to explain the economics of football to you and some other here..
Cassel can not be kept regardless of what happens to brady.. His cost to the patriots because of the unique situation they are in is more than his worth..
Now if brady retired right now then maybe there is a slight possibility of cassel being a patriot next year.. In that case I think a smart GM like belichick would still trade him but in that case you could sign him to a 5 year deal for about 45 mil. and brady would be off the books..
The only other option for cassel to be on the 09 roster is to trade brady away.. and that is just

the 14 million is smoke and mirrors.. it will never leave foxboro and cassel will never see it.. it's paper money to retain the legal rights to cassel.. So they can trade him..
then they work out a trade and the franchise deal is voided then the new team works out a long term deal for a more reasonable salary.. I might be wrong on this part but I think the 14 million gets worked into the long term deal.. All I know is neither the new team or the patriots are on the hook for the 14 million on the cap and thats what these teams care about..
I seriously don't understand why some on here think this is a panic move by the patriots or that this has anything to do with brady..
it's not a panic move it's the only smart move... anything else would be retarded..
If they let him walk they get nothing for a valuable asset and even worse the jets would sign him.. The patriots rather not see cassel go to the jets just on principal.. let them suffer another year of a declining farve..
slapping the tag on cassel is brilliant. this is a weak year for QB's in the draft and quite a few teams need a QB and we happen to have a near pro bowler who is 25 that is ready to take over your team..
The more I think about this the patriots could get a LOT for cassel... minimum a mid to late first rounder and a 3-5 round pick..
this costs the pats nothing to do not a single dime.. sure technically putting the franchise tag on to trade is against the spirit of the intent of the franchise tag system, but the way it's written it has been done before in the past and it will be done this off season..
I love it!!! I hope we get another good LB with that extra pick..

Of course I'm talking about trading Cassel. Do you need that drawn in crayon?
So basically you're going to keep acting like an ******* because we fall on different sides of the aisle?Yeah it was over the line, and I'll never considering the hatchet "buried" b/c your a liberal and I cant stand people like you.
You're a big man Travis, a real big man.
It's a pretty hot topic in football, isn't it?Why do you care so much about Brady and the Patriots anyway?
Shouldn't you be more concerned w/ who Daniels is going to find for a replacement for cutler? Former patriots OC goes to the bronco's, Cassel goes on the market, former OC would of course want him after working with him, bench's the useless cutler. Makes sense to me
And you try to make fun of my football knowledge. I'm sure McDaniels want to replace the supremely talented, record setting, Pro Bowl pick Jay Cutler.
That's right, we don't know Brady's future. That is the whole point. What I think is going on here is some of you guys want to use this as some sort of news on the condition of brady.. How do you figure? The Pats have a QB who just led their team to 11-5 in his first year of starting in how long? At the very least, he can keep the team competitive if Brady can't come back.Your not thinking like GM.. your thinking like a fan.. it's much more complicated than just ok well brady is hurt and cassel is a qb then they must keep cassel.
Keeping him is almost a no brainer.
Sure, they don't want to, but it's certainly the smart move.the patriots do not want to spend that cap room on two QB's

Cassel signs $14.65M franchise tender
Posted: Adam Schefter
Now that QB Matt Cassel has signed his $14.65 million non-exclusive franchise tender — the largest guarantee on a one-year contract in the history of the NFL — some around the league believe it’s 95 percent that he remains in New England.
The only way the Patriots would trade Cassel is if they know QB Tom Brady is healthy, and even if they do, the bidder needs to be to Cassel’s liking and offer a contract to his liking, or there’s no deal.
That’s not to say it can’t happen. But it’s not going to be easy to make it happen.

For the record, I can't stand your views on a few issues, but I think you are a good guy with good intentions most of the time.

Thanks man. I really appreciate that. Believe me when I say the feeling is mutual.

Moving back. I'm from Omaha originally and trying to get a job in law enforcement in Florida is a nightmare, so I'm gonna apply to Omaha Police. If they accept me I'll be moving back permanently.

Cool. We will have to get the Mustangs together and grab Tim along for the ride.

I think he is going by the bull**** leaked out of foxboro.. BTW the OMG brady may need another surgery was leaked out of foxboro too. .. he might or he might not miss 09 that I do not know but I know that was leaked from foxboro
BTW do you think 11-5 and missing the playoffs is a satisfactory result for this team.. the only reason it's ok is brady went down..
I still don't think someone who needs a QB is gonna give that first round pick up for Matt Cassel. Not every team has Moss and Welker to help out a young QB and those stats. Just cause he played for the almighty Pats doesn't mean he's worth that.
And no he's not a "proven" QB yet.
