1994 351W Roller Engine Question

I needed some advice on a roller 351W. From what I could find these are supposed to have a compression ratio in the high 8's. From the factory they had the E7TE heads. What combustion chamber size do these heads have?

If I get one of these stock engines with 80K miles can I install 58cc AFR 205 heads and a moderate cam. Will this be a good street engine?

I want to purchase AFR 205 heads so I can use them now and later on down the road when I have the $ to build a 408W.

Let me know what you guys think about this stock short block with AFR 205 heads with 58cc combustion chambers.
 
E7's have 64 cc chambers.If it has a roller cam it will spec like this: 256/266* advertised duration lift is .422/.473 with a 116* LSA Running it with 1.7 rockers will boost the lift by .030 at the valve. Works great with a carb.
 
My dad found two at a junkyard, so I have two to choose from. I am driving 3 hours to go see which of the two looks the best.

If the stock heads are 64cc what will the AFR 205 head with 58cc combustion chambers do to the compression?

CarfreakGT, as D.Hearne mentioned the engines are from a F250 truck or an E250 van. My information gathering tells me it is a bigger displacement version of the 5.o and with a stronger block and a roller cam like the 5.0.
 
I don't have a calculator handy, but the compression ratio will go up by about a half point I'd guess. Driveability will depend on the cam you run with it. And intake/carb combo (if you go that route) The bigger the cam, intake (plenum volume as in dual plane vs single plane) and carb, the higher up the rpm band you move the power as a general rule.

The engine was torn down to the short block and everything looks good on the engine.

I have about $2200 to get it on the road. The two options I am looking with this amount of $ is an Air Gap RPM with Fast EZ-EFI.

The second is a carb, cam, and AFR 205 heads.

Would I treat the EZ-EFI like a carb and get a dual plane Edelbrock Air Gap or would it be best to use a single plane with this EFI system?
 
The EFI systems all work with a single plane. I don't think I've seen em with a dual plane. If you go carbed, highrise dual plane is what you want. And donlt go overboard on a carb. Smaller is better with a carb. With a 351, no bigger than a 750 (vacuum sec) is max. I'd go with a Holley 670 Street Avenger.

I guess it depends on what you want.Excellent driveability or brute power?
As for what intake to run with that EFI setup why not contact the manufacturer and ask them what they recommend?

D**n you, Armand. :-) I was set on a 302 build. Now, I'm re-weighing my options and considering a 351. Local Pull-a-Part has (5) E-250's from 1995-97.

CarFreakGt, it is funny to see that I am influencing others :D I know what you mean, I have a 1991 5.0 HO and the 302 that was in the car, but I decided to buy a roller 351W.

That means buying another intake and most likely headers. I already have ceramic long tubes for the 302 and FRPP shorty headers for the 5.0L. I think it will be better in the long run. Are you going to go 351W or stroke it to a larger displacement?

Let me know if you get it, we may need to share information to get these engines tearing up some asphalt.
 
Armand--I'm going to stay w/ the 351 as is, for now. I found one locally already mildly built that will help me get mine up and running after the suspension rebuild and engine transplant. Mine's been sitting so long, I want to be able to take my boys out in it on nice days, since they're getting old enough to ask about it and enjoy it.

Now, I can't say that down the road that I won't be exploring grander plans for the engine. But, for the price I'm getting this one for, I should be able to sell my 302 (which needs a total rebuild), Holley carb and Weiand intake separately, and a set of headers to make it a wash. Basically, an even trade for the 351 (no rebuild necessary), for those parts that I listed. And, no digging into the suspension and tranny fund!
 
The large intake valve in the 205 may not have enough radial clearance on that piston, you'll have to check the clearance....

Compression will change by about .8-.9 with the 58cc head..

Thanks for the information, I will make sure to have the clearance checked, if it does not work then I will just go ahead and rebuild the engine locally so that these heads work.

If it does work, the increase in compression will be a good boost. :D
 
Pistons and Valve Clearance

I currently have the 351W (F4TE) down to the short block. Does anyone know if the pistons on a 1994 F4TE engine are cast or forged?


I was also wondering if the AFR 205's need some valve clearance, can the pistons be notched more without removing the pistons from the block?

The pistons have a good size square shaped notch in the center from the factory.
