1995 GT Convertable question

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a 1995 GT Convertable automatic and was wandering if these were very good. I know some years had some problems and had a lot less power. Anything you could tell me about the mustangs of this year would be great.

Also, what are some things to check for that are known to go bad so I can check them out before I go through with the deal.

What I might do, not sure yet if I want to is trade my 1997 GMC Jimmy with 148,000 miles for a 1995 GT Converable with leather with 55,000 miles. The only reason I'm still unsure is that my girlfriend drives my vehicles and I already have a 2000 V6 Manual and I don't know if I want he driving a manual or a V8 automatic in the winter here in Indiana. Giving her a 4X4 would make be feel so much safer.

Some advice to the questions above would be greatly appreciated.

i have a 95 vert. but its a manual. i have over twice the miles on it than the one you're talking about.

so far only a few things have had to be replaced...
- drivers side roof "strut"
- steering column
- harmonic balancer
- clutch

anything else i replaced was because i wanted an upgrade. i'm due to replace the steering rack next and get a front steering upgrade.

overall its been a really good car. lots of fun to drive. just make sure you change the oil and keep it running well and it will treat you right.

terrible in snow though. not so great in the Seattle rain either.

the auto verts are dogggggs. they CAN be modded to be fast tho. just look at a few on the board here. i had mine stock for about 3-4 years then i started to mod her. thats when she started to break. i converted to 5spd last fall. the absolute first thing you would have to do on that car would be a gear. that 2.73 with the auto and as heavy as she is.....oh god, no worse feeling. after the gear install, i started to have fun with her ....and they look so friggin cool

I have replaced the following since new.

Oil gauge sender
Temperature gauge sender
Convertible top lift cylinders
The ECT
The ACT
Belt
Wiper/blinker switch
Pinion seal
Right power mirror
Reattached the left side window stops twice
Power seat switch

Nothing else other than maintaince items such as tune-ups and fluid changes
I have the original brakes and clutch, I have never changed a bulb.
As far as reliability, this is the best car that I have ever owned.

I have a 5-speed with 3.55 gears GT40Y heads, GT40 intake, 1.7 roller rockers, FMS shorty headers, 60mm throttle body and a cat back exhaust. The car can get out of it’s own way.

Sounds like you've got a nice GT lined up. Leather sucks in summer in Indy. Plan on keeping a towel in the car. Besides all the mechanical stuff mentioned in other replies, check for rust at the rocker panels, especially if the top is not original.

I've got a 95 GT vert AODE with 64.5K miles. It's going to need a new top soon--I'm not the original owner.

It's a sweet car, gets around 17 mpg in town and 22-24 on the freeway depending on speed. On 87, by the way.

Slow? Maybe next to a modded car, but since I don't street race or go to the track, I could care less. It's fast enough for me to pass safely on a two lane road and that's all that matters to me.

Leather can be a little sticky in the summer, but that's also why there's AC. No big deal. I wouldn't want cloth.

Except for normal maintenance, the car has been trouble free.

Buy it and enjoy it.

I know this might ruin your enthusiasm, but Mustangs are TRASH in the snow. I drove mine this winter (I'm in Mass) and it was more trouble then it was worth, she's getting garaged this winter. If you want a nice cruiser though, there is nothing in the world like a droptop and a nice sounding V8!!

hehe...i live in the nasty chicago weather during the winter and i drive mine year round. she isnt the fastest in the world but she has some decent power to her and you just have to be careful in the snow. just get some decent snow tires whether you switch them in the snow or keep them all year long. i think mustang wins in the looks category hands down and the vert just adds so much more in the summer. nuthin like a loud, mustang vert in the summer spinning tires
