I just got a 96 Gt the dash brake light as well as the ABS light are both illuminated, when the brake pedal is applied it actually feels/sounds like something is scraping, not a very fluid movement.

the brakes do work but the pedal seems to travel too far.where should I start to troubleshoot?

when I got the car there were different size rims on the front and back of car,and I thought that may have been the reason why the ABS light was on ,however after disconnecting the battery both dash lights came back immediatly.

The problem with fixing anything abs related and diagnosing the abs light is you pretty much have to bring it to a dealer. They don't sell the scanning tools to diagnose it yourself and most shops (and part stores like autozone) don't have the ford abs scanners.

So basically if you want to diagnose that abs light you have to bring it to a dealer unless you know of a shop that has one (most dont).

you can read the ABS codes on 94-97 Mustangs yourself. Thanksgiving duties prevent me from finding the exact procedure but there's a diagnostic port by the fuse box under the hood and you short the test pin to ground and the codes will flash out on the ABS light. Google may turn it up. Ford changed ABS units in, I think, 1998 and the later units have to be read with an appropriate scanner.

The brake light and too much travel probably mean low fluid and air in the system.

thanks patman 0911

in the procedure it says to ground the one terminal of the connector, however I ended up jumping 2 of the 3 that are in that connector,I jumped the og/w
to the black, and viola instant code reader. im getting code 34= left rear ABS sensor continuity fault.

this reminds me of the paper clip trick with the old EEC IV.

so you have two separate problems.

1. a left rear sensor fault

2. Have you checked the pads and calipers? checked for leaks? it sounds to me like you have air in the system.

I did not check what code number 34 is my self but check the continuity on the wires from the sensor to the abs module.. if the wires are good it's most likely the sensor went bad
