First time poster. Ok, so heres the deal. Today, I went to go look at a 1996 mustang gt auto with 110k miles on it. So we go for a test drive and he suddenly mentions to me that that the car will not shift into 2nd gear unless you do so manually. If you put it in drive it will just keep reving until you reach the limiter. Once you manually shift from 1 to 2, then to drive, it will go from 3 to 4 fine without manually shifting. The guy is really content on telling me all it needs is a fluid change. He said the car has sat for 5 years in storage and he brought it out and this is what the car was doing. The thing is he is desperate for money and said I could have it for $2300. Everything else is pretty nice for a 15 year old car. I can do basic maintainance but I would never think about opening up a tranny. I know it's hard to tell without seeing the car, but do you think it's something simple, like a sensor, or is the tranny going out?

You might check into Ford TSB 97-11-11. It might explain your 1-2 issues...

You could certainly take the car to a trusted mechanic or transmission specialist to have a look. This would be your best bet, because we can only make wild guesses as to the actual problem. A specialist could run some diagnostics on the transmission to determine the cause and likely give you a cost estimate for repair. I seriously doubt a fluid change will fix the problem though. They would be able to hook up gauges, and have a good feel for if the transmission is experiencing flare or slippage between shifts, which are good indications the transmissions life will be very limited.

If the current seller is certain that a low fluid level is the issue, then I would ask him to top it off. If it fixes the problem, then great. If not, then get an expert opinion. I highly recommend an expert opinion before you buy. The transmission is one of the most expensive items in the vehicle to replace, would could easily exceed the value of the car!
