2.3 t5 on a 302???

is it possible to put a 2.3 t5 behind a 302? i was told that all you had to do was swap out bellhousings. is this true? thanks.

and pilot bearing. i don't remember which one it is exactly, something from like an 80's ranger. the snout on the input shaft is a smaller diameter. i had a 4 banger t5 in my car for a while. first gear is usually 3.97 so if you have any sort of gearing in the rear, your first gear is going to be rediculously useless. i had that with my 4.10's...it sucked balls. but yes it works fine.
 
If you already have a t5 mounted to your 302, then you already have the right bellhousing...

you know, that's what i've always thought, and i still actually think that. but i had a weird occurance when i was rebuilding my motor. i used the bell that came with the 4 banger t5. after i had everything together, i was trying to rotate my motor by hand to set my rockers, and it wouldn't turn at all! turns out it was because my flywheel was catching on something inside the bell! i was freaking out thinking something inside the motor wasn't right, so i started taking everything off backwards in order that i had just put it together, and when i got the bell off, the motor would rotate just fine. so i switched it out to one of my other t5 bells and everything was good after that. i dunno what was up, they look the EXACT same.
 
no they are just as strong, I dont care what they are rated for..

the gear ratios in it make for a fun ride though..

A buddy of mine ran a 4banger t5 behind his healthy 306 for about a year.
I bought the trans when he pulled it, so I could use in for a rebuild in a transmission class I was taking.
That t5 was still usable... and in fact I still keep it in the garage as a backup/spare. :nice:

If you measure the ID of the crank, and the OD of the trans input you can take those specs to NAPA, or another parts store to look up the appropriate part.

The part has been provided here before...
 
i picked up a used t-5, fox bell housing, clutch fork, good clutch disk an pressure plate for $100. I was happy until I looked up the part number an saw it was a 2.3 T-5. I may try it now anyway. Just watching this hoping some one can list the throw out bearing number.

Technically no. They are made of the same materials as the V8 trans but are weaker due to gear ratios.

Steeper gears cause the torque rating to go down. It's just the physics of gearing.


They will hold up fine though if you drive it the right way. You can blow up a stock v8 t-5 with a stock motor and yet some guys have had 2.3L t-5's behind 300HP 5.0's with no prob.

4-banger bells won't bolt up to a 302. They don't even have the same appearance and a v-8 clutch fork and cable won't bolt up to it.


There are two V8 bellhousings through. The E3 bellhousing that came on 83-85's used with a 10" clutch and the E6 bellhousing used on 86-93's and uses the 10.5" clutch. When running a 10'5 clutch, it usuall contacts the E3 bellhousing and requires grinding to clearance it
 
I ran a four banger t-5 in my car for a summer and it was awesome, I didn't even do the pilot bearing. Its now in my buddies and he beats the hell out of it. I think they are great for the money.
 
You gotta do the pilot bearing. The input shaft is a smaller diameter so without it the shaft will wobble with the clutch disk with it. You might get a vibration and the tip of the shaft will get chewed up
