Drivetrain 2003 Mach 1, Broken Rear End.

Hello All,
I have a 2003 Mach 1 5spd, I had my rear end go on me. Mechanic says that the pinion bearing failed. He is quoting $2,600 to replace entire rear axle assembly with a re manufactured unit. I was just wondering if that sounds reasonable or if I should be looking for other options. I am not mechanically inclined to do this myself plus I live in an apartment so no garage space. What are my options here?

if looking for other options then try searching car-part.com. A whole salvage yard rear end about $700 - $800. Add some $$ for a rebuild kit. But if unable to do the work yourself it does limit the real options.

Buy a used 99-04 GT 8.8 axle. Same thing other than the brakes which you can swap over.

Housing, and axle shafts are identical. The M-2300-M kit has brand new mach brake components other than the calipers if you wanted to pre-install them on the GT axle and then have someone just swap axles for you. Make sure you use the Mach 1 calipers though. Slight difference over the GT calipers.

$2600 is a ripoff when I've seen used GT axles sell for $300-400 ish
