2005 Automatic GT Suppose It's Possible????

Ok, I was thinking about this, being a drag racer at heart. Does anybody think it would be possible to take a brand new 2005 GT with an automatic, because autos can be faster than a straight drive in a drag car, if everything else is right, at least they are more consistent anyway, but enough with that. Do you believe it would be possible to take a bone stock auto GT, put 4.56 gears in it, maybe some sort of traction bars, small slicks, and get one of those computer programmers when they come out, you know they will come out eventually. But with just these minimal mods and maybe some lightweight skinny wheels on front and drag wheels on rear, do you think this car would run in the mid 8.50's in the eighth mile, and 13.20's in the quarter? Given the car's horsepower, and the fact that there are cars with a lot less horsepower running faster than that, do you think it will be possible with the 05 GT?

Well it has been estimated at about 13.7 and I'm sure it will be a bit quicker then that real life, it sure felt faster than a high 13 car to me, I would say mid 13's, maybe even 13.4 So if you are looking for low 13's, I would figure just a few minor tweaks would get you there easy.

well, i have read about stock 2004 gt's going into the high 12's with no more than a k&n filter and 4.30 gears, now granted those were 5 speed cars with slicks, but now the automatic 05 has about the same first gear ratio as a 5 speed, and with 4.56 gears and some slicks and some teaks to the computer, I think low 13's in the 1/4 mile is not too far fetched. I can't wait to get some real numbers from one of these cars. I want one so bad, but I know I will want to race it, that is why i am leaning towards the automatic, my old 92 lx started life as a 5 speed, and it ran pretty good, but a few missed shifts and the trans is toast. I converted my 92 to a c-4 auto and loved it, and the car was actually faster, but I had one heck of stall converter in it with a lot of work done to the motor, now I have the 5 speed back in the car and I miss my reliable automatic. Anyway, I can't wait until a new 05 hits the drag strip, I will be watching these forums real close.

Simply not true.

12.9 is about your limit without getting into the engine.

I've seen a 12.96 at houston raceway from the following mods:

01 red gt 5 spd
mcleod clutch
nitto 275 dr's
shifter
catback/midpipe
3.73's FRPPs

Thats like basic basic mods besides the clutch.

Might also depend on how Ford "tunes" the auto tranny. I expect they will be VERY conservative, for smoother shifts and especially to avoid durability issues during the warranty period. The resulting downside for performance will probably include:
-- reduced engine power during upshifts
-- full-throttle upshifts at lower-than-optimum RPM
-- long & mushy shifts

That said, I think your performance goals ARE achievable with the mod's you list IF one of those "computer programmer" tuners you mentioned can address the above issues. But I'm skeptical that anything can be easily done about the engine-managment reduced-power issue. Time will tell. Certainly a tuner should correct the speedo error when you change gears. IMHO 4.56 seems a bit steep, unless this is a track-only vehicle. Might be nice for the tranny if there's a chip with a street/street switch -- after all, who wants hard shifts and reduced durability for daily driving?

And what brand of crack wereyou smoking that day??? No way you are doing better then 13.5's with those mods. And even thats with a GREAT driver.

Everyone has got their I saw one car do this. I'm not doubting that. Is the 01 before the HP increase? I thought 02's and up were the "PI" motors. I find it hard to believe a 240hp 3400lb car is hitting 12's. I guess it's all launch. What were his 60fts.
The majority of people won't ever hit those times. In fact if you put those same mods on another GT and put the same driver in it, I doubt he'll match that time. I do a lot of running on the street, and the street is a totally different world than the track. On the street, a stang with those mods will have a hard time beating 13 second cars, let alone 12's. A stock C5 runs like a 13.1, there's no way in hell that mustang is going to take a C5 on the street. Not just that but people like to hide there mods too. I'm not sure why, but everyone is always claiming "I'm stock".

Mustang92 ran mid 12's with 256ish rwhp. it was mostly suspension, slicks, and gears that got him in the 12's. ofcoarse his trap wasn't very high.

You do know that is what the Cobra runs with 380ish rwhp? Its also what the 4WHEEL DRIVE (Best possible launch) 300hp Wrx STI runs?
