Okay, I really like the new 2011 Mustang GT but have come up with two issues that have me puzzled. Road & Track just did a great article on the GT and said that Ford has now included the dreaded 1-4 Skip Shift device in the new 6 speed. Yikes! Can this be defeated? Any new owners out there who have this? Feedback.
Next, what is up with the sound deadening in the rear wheel wells? Ford used the same material that is under the hood to cut noise in the rear wheel housing! What about rain, sand, snow, etc. and how do you wash these out? Very odd design.

Skip Shift sucks...i have it (for now) and hate it

two ways to remove it- Skip Shift eliminator, module u plug into your tranny that tricks it. usually around $30

u can also have it removed with a custom tune

The skip shift only hits me when I'm driving slow, so it doesn't matter. Whenever I'm driving normal, it doesn't kick in.

That wheel-well thing is odd I have to admit. Way to save a buck Ford.

Wow, I had never heard about skip shift before reading this thread, then I googled it. I can't believe a manufacturer would do that. Let them screw around with the automatic transmissions instead.

The "skip shift" feature is what allows Ford to meet the CAFE fuel MPG rating standards (i.e. improves your MPG)...GM has had it in their Corvettes for many years (my '01 Vette Coupe) has it...you can defeat it easily by giving a bit more throttle in first gear...you can also defeat it by feigning your shift into 4th and then quickly moving your stick into 2nd (this will become second nature after a while).

I had a 2002 Camaro Z/28 6-speed with that same 1-4 skip shift. I hated that "feature". Bought a plug-in module that eliminated it. Best. Mod. Ever.

mmmmm

MMM I must be doing something wrong, my 2011 is still in the break-in period so I have not drove it hard at all and I have not come across the tranny forcing to go from 1st to 4th. I did read in the owners manual where this can be program into a key to do, but I have not programed the mykeys yet.

Mine is not doing it either. Not that I'm complaining or anything.

Word is the system Ford is using on the Getrag 6-speed works through the PCM so eliminating the skip shift feature may not be as simple as installing a jumper wire.

I have yet to experience the car forcing me to go from 1-4. When I'm going slow it will flash something like "Shift 1-4 for fuel econ" on the display, but it doesn't have any physical element that makes me shift that way. Which is good, because the 1-3 shift has a better feel to it when I'm puttering around.
